So im thinking of ditching my ralley 1's for some steel wheels, and poverty caps. I have seen the caps re-popped all over...and also seen wheels. But with shipping I think the steel wheels are a little steep for what they are. Is there a better option for wheels? We dont have much for junk yards down here...so the chances of finding them there is almost zero. Also i have been watching craigslist for months...and nothing around here. Any ideas?

Yeah I have checked a few of the salvage yards around here and its nothing but newer cars. Dont they have to be special wheels too that will accept the poverty caps?

All you are looking for is the standard steel rim that came on a car with dog dishes or regular wheelcovers that was used on a Camaro, Firebird, Tempest, LeMans, GTO, Malibu, Monte Carlo, 442, Cutlass, Regal, Century, Skylark, Gran Sport (RWD of course).

You should be able to find both 14 and 15" versions - even in Florida. Post a wanted ad on Craiglist if none of those salvage yards can help you out. Someone near you has some looking for a new home....

You can use a 15x7 wheel from a mid 80's G.M. midsize, Caprice, Lesabre,etc.
They have the same 5x 4.75 bolt pattern.

That's what I have on my 66 from an Impala. OE PMD Dog dish caps work fine. Picked them up for $20 each at a junk yard. Somewhere around here I have the "Holander" number which will make the junk yard crawl easier. If I find it I'll post it.

So there are no special clips that let the dog dish caps fit on the wheel. I cant believe every GM whel that wasnt a factory mag with accept these caps??

There is a set of wheels and tires on ebay not real far from me at like $160. Think thats fair?

There are three "bumps" on the wheels that hold the caps on, no clips. Take a cap with you when you do your junk yard search and pop it on to make sure.

I'm not sure about the dog-dishes, but I'm running 14x6's off a mid-80's S10 pickup. the original wire wheels covers snapped right in. Paid $25 each for them in near new condition from a local salvage yard.

Hollander number might be 950. Find an 80's Caprice and check fit a poverty cap. The last one I bought was $15 in 2006.

$160.00 for bare steel rims seems high to me. I paid $20.00 each for my 15x7's and ultimately gave my 14x6's away to a friend for his '61 Chevy (which had 14x5's).

And yes, the standard steel rims for GM RWD cars have pretty much all been designed with the same basic shape (that would allow a dog dish to mount on) since at least the 50's - probably longer. The variables are the bolt pattern, the width and the diameter.

Another note - the dog dish will mount up fine whether you go with 14 or 15" rims.

Then I'd say that is a fair price - if you wanted to run 14's.

I hadn't notice that the $160 included some tires either. The tires may add to the value if they are the right sizes and in decent condition. Otherwise it could cost you to get rid of the tires.

i bought my 14" steelies on ebay and am looking to trade up to 15" steelies (but need to work out front wheel clearance as have lowering hotchkiss springs).

Here's a pic, steel wheels are a great low maintenance way to go (powder coat them black)....

Trim rings also look good with dog dish caps...



Two years ago someone put up a post asking if anybody had ever seen dog dish caps with trim rings - and if so could they post a pic.

I happened to have a set of NOS trim rings that I found in my Dad's garage years ago when we sold the house, so I put them on to snap a picture.

I left them on because I liked the look.

It doesnt include tires....just the wheels and the caps. But I do have 14" ralley I's on it now, and the tires are good. I may go with redlines though
