A guy i know has a 68 GTO - he has been fixing it up slowly for years.
He brought it by my place Saturday. First time i've seen it. He isn't big on all GTO/Pontiac specifics. It has a chrome front bumper. He never mentioned this before. Are there things to tell the difference between 68 GTO chrome front bumper/grilles versus Tempest/Lemans chrome front bumper/grilles ? Its a Hardtop Red / Parchment int, HO 360hp matching numbers (WS - fresh rebuild), 4spd, Air Cond, Hood Tach, Gauge cluster, and probably more options also. I was about to leave when he pulled up - so didn't get to fine tooth comb the car. He won't be getting the PHS. Just wondering if there is a way to tell between the chrome frt bumps. Even still - if it is a correct piece - i guess only the PHS would tell if it actually came that way or not. Just curious if it is a correct GTO frt bumper assy. First one i've seen in person. He wants to sell it now. Fairly decent unfinished driver quality, with a fresh paint job that he kinda got screwed on. He's gonna bail out and lose money. |

[QUOTE] think the grilles are same as LeMans grilles...except for GTO emblem/QUOTE]
yes you are right. GTO emblem is a two pin emblem ( 1967 ) works fine 68 model seems to have a small nose (chrome ) 69 seems to have a larger hose section. This is what i have seen over different sites / books . http://forums.maxperformanceinc.com/...1&d=1295256908 |

Thanks for the info so far.
I know he won't send in for PHS. 242 VIN, and VIN coded WS engine - is all he cares about. Wonder what the PHS Invoice says on a chrome front bumper car ? |

There should be a 674 code on the billing history from PHS. If box 67 has a 4 in it, it is an endura delete. Scott

Like what was said, PHS would tell you if the bumper is original or not. I bought my '68 with a chrome bumper on it, it was Verdoro green originally but the PHS doesn't say it was an Endura delete car. Still kinda baffles me why they would swap a chrome bumper on since from what I can tell all the other body panels are original. However this car may have seen some races and I am told the chrome bumper is a lot lighter weight.

Thanks for the box 67-4 info , Pongto.
Good that PHS uses BHC instead of Invoice for 1968. Anything thats either/or - or no charge - wouldn't reflect on an Invoice. Codyyy, the enduras are definitely much heavier than the chromies. Well .... like 20-25 lbs, from memory of the feel of removing both types on parts cars - 20 years ago. |

I recently parted a 68 Endura delete or chrome bumper. It appeard to be identical to the 68 Tempest Custom parts car that I'm parting. No differences except the GTO emblem.

I'd personally get the PHS for the car anyway. It isn't too much money but is definitely worth having. It's like having a pedigree for the car.

Have you done a search on PY? I do not think they are the same.

Definately the same. There is always confusion as someone will post a pic of that god awful 69 chrome bumper on a 68 LeMans or GTO as a reference. All 68's that recieved the chrome nose, recieved the same part. No 69 GTO's recieved a chrome nose, btw.

Agreed! The 69 is butt-ugly, what were they thinking? Someone sat at a meeting and said "You know what Bob, I think this new design does look better!" Scott
