I was thinking about selling my 90 silverado to get a 95 or 96 4x4 toyota pickup its a v6 auto with only 75000 on with very lil rust I have heard that the 3.0 v6's are not too good a motor and my silverado hasn't given me nothing but trouble since ive owned it. Its got 223000 on it but motor and tranny only have around 7000 but every now and then the tranny slips going to 3rd from 2nd. would it be worth selling the silverado for the yoda?

I've got a 90 Silverado myself, just a second vehicle for home depot runs. Has 250k on it and I'm sure the motors been rebuilt or replaced at sometime in its life(had it about 4 years now) Other than severly deferred maintenance from the previous owner which I remedied, it runs like a champ at a solide 11 mpg As far as the Toyota, if the head gaskets haven't been changed(due to blowing, a common problem) and the waterpump and timing belt are original plan on doing that or having it done...soon. Other than that the toyo trucks are pretty solid.

Im pretty sure the toyota is all original they said it was owned by a old man and my truck gets around 16 mpg and its got 33's and a body lift but all the neglect from previous owners is starting to show its signs even though ive bought all new suspension and steering parts. The other day I lost a block between the rear spring and axle. and it broke the u bolts the drive shaft fell out and rear end went sideways. Im just tired of all the problems that this truck gives me

Just have the Toyota checked out and be prepared for some issues with it in the future.
What motor is in your Silverado that you get 16mpg??? I've got a 350 2wd.

My Chevy Avalance has 246,000 miles. With the exception of the transfer case... the running gear is all original. Toyotas are overrated, underpowered and uncomfortable IMO.

its a 350 with a rv cam bored .040 over and I have to drive a 100 mile round trip mon- thur to school in ct it uses about 25-30 dollars in gas every day

In 1990 my dad bought a new Chevy 2500 (6 lug light duty) extended cab 2WD with a 350 automatic. In 1991 my uncle bought a new Toyota X-tra cab 4x4 with a V6 and a 5 speed. My dads Chevy got 17 on the highway... my uncles Toyota got 16 on the highway. The Chevy had tons more power and didn't have to drop a gear to pull a hill.

BTW - My 4x4 Avalanche gets 16 on the highway.... and I drive like an A-hole. It would probably get 18 if I kept my foot out of it and drove the speed limit.

You're running 100 miles a day between VA and CT? No wonder it's falling apart running down those crater filled goat paths. If you want to stay with 4WD try a S10 blazer, S10 4X4 or the ranger.

Sounds like your truck was "adjusted" by someone watching Trucks and thought $1500 would set it up to pound in the woods or in the mud.
Just get a small car to travel with,
Then you can still pound the shot of the old Cheby, it will be less $$$ to fix then then Yota and you know your going to try and pound that to??? LOL

The guy I got the truck from is the kind when it breaks just get another junker to ride around but he only had the truck for about 2 months and since it had a new transmission I traded my dodge power ram I built from the ground up using half a dodge he sold me. First thing I did was a tune up than by the end of the week the motor blew got one built and installed for $1700. I am wanting to take the lift and big tires off sooner or later I took the truck offroading once and realized this trucks was not meant to be a play truck and its not hit a trail since. Yes I do go to lincoln tech and im coming to realize it was a mistake the school sucks and some of the teachers are not the smartest around some of the things they tell the student are nothing but BS. I feel like im going just to get a paper that says I graduated a automotive school cause back home thats all everyone wants is someone that went to an automotive school.

Work in a repair facility that services all makes. 3.0 Toyota V6 is, for lack of a better word-Junk. They have terrible sludging issues.Every 1989-1995 or so Toyota pickup or 4runner we get in there seems to need an engine, even with low miles. If you get one, get one with a 4 cylinder, or get a later model with a 3.4 V6.You should get good service out of those. The later models also dont feel like you "sitting on the floor" like the earlier ones.

Those TBI engines are almost indestructible. I installed a used, allegedly 30K-mile '91 TBI 350 into my '71 C20 about 15 years and 200K miles ago, and it still runs perfectly. All I've had to replace in that time was the starter and water pump. It's just now starting to blow a puff of blue smoke when starting, which I could fix by replacing the valve stem seals.

At the same time I installed the TBI motor, I also installed an alleged 50K-mile '86 700-R4 that I bought at a junk yard in Alamogordo, NM. Replaced all the external shaft seals before installation and rewired the pressure switches and lockup clutch solenoid to work with the engine computer. I expected maybe another 30K miles at best before needing O/H... it's still doing great. And that's after towing my '66 GTO all over the country too.

It was a bit of a PITA to install all the electronics into the '71, but everything works as it was meant to. Absolutely the best thing I ever did for that truck, and it's the most reliable vehicle I've ever had.

Perhaps the ones in CA are pretty solid. That's not true in snowy areas. The frames are a disaster. Do a little research on the years of frame issues, at least '90 to '07.

The frame, if it's got low mileage and been kept inside in bad weather, may be fine. You did say it has very little rust, but I've seen them with clean bodies and terrible frames. Just inspect it carefully and be aware that it may fall apart in nothing flat if you drive it in the winter.

I bought a new 2000 Sierra Long-Bed, 2wd-posi with the 4.8, it cost me $18.5k. I drove it back and forth to work for 8-1/2 years and put nothing into it except for brakes, tires, oil, one fuel pressure regulator, a passenger-side front hub assembly and one battery. It's got 120k on it and is as reliable as when new.

I kept weight in it in the winter and the snow was no problem.

The State started to use salt brine on the roads right after I bought it and they would be shiny wet with it. Yet there is very light surface rust on the bottom of the fenders where the cinders have worn the paint off but that's it. The frame is solid with nothing but non-penetrating rust.

My son-in-law wants it for his business, but I can't part with it. It owes me nothing and I can't see any reason why it won't go well over 200k.
