A friend was told he had the wrong intake on his original 68 firebird beacuse it was a RA II intake. This was a magazine editor that told him this. He called me kinda upset and confused and I had to set the record straight.

There is a lot of wrong info. out there,even in magazines and books.

I really enjoy seeing nicely restored Pontiacs with red air cleaner decals in magazine articles. Don't know how many people have asked me if they are correct.

The "Buick" decals? Yes, we all see them. Shame really..

Yes that's the ones. 400-RAM AIR, 400-4 etc.

Saw some of these decals on cars in the POCI Convention concourse judging in WV last year. WOW!

The fact is they only diff is the date code.
Not everyone is as knowledgeable as many are here.
Could see pay'n that much IF you where do'n a concourse, AND money wasnt an issue.
Otherwise...

As long as everybody has a bunch of these laying around....I could use a D208 or D228 for a reasonable amount.

So, you need a RAM AIR II intake for those RAII heads you're looking to match then?

Collecting as opportunity presents itself. Trading for date codes needed or selling to fund purchase of correct codes. But yeah, that's a bunch of them. Some still have carbs and TVS and choke towers attached.

It's entirely possible Scott assuming the car in question was built in Pontiac or Lordstown. Other F dates I've come across are F13 & F158 which it would seem were cast just in time for final end of year production once the D228 & D238 heads ran out. Unfortunately, I would have to guess a G dated intake would have been destined for 69 production - again JMHO.

The service dated 96's were all done in January of 1969, A20, A22 & A239 and all share a distinct cut mark across the 9 & 6 casting numbers.

I agree, I think F castings would pretty much be the end of 68 production. G castings would go on a 69. Unless someone has a G block that the VIN matches a 68?

C088=9790140

C128=9794234

What's the date on the cowl tag Greg? Pontiac Plant car? 2506 As-Cast block C118 casting date? Heads D228 or D238?

Chris, I may have to re-think the F and G casting dates. I have a 68 LeMans ragtop parts car that is a 06D build week and its' castings are all late F.

F288=block
F198=2bbl intake
F248=RH head
F178=LH head
F278=exhaust manifolds

This car is a Pontiac plant car, and they did build for at least another 3 weeks after 06D, so I would think there has to be some G dated stuff out there for 68.

Scott, see this thread regarding convertibles that have funky dates (engines after cowl build date, etc...) We may have stumbled onto something regarding the building of convertibles whereby the body was completed at one point and the drive train added later.
