At some point the 350 H.O. in my car was painted black. I want to return it to pontiac 66-72 metallic blue. I'm looking for pictures showing what surfaces were blue coming from the factory. Is it possible to paint it without pulling the engine. What issues will I encounter?

going to be pretty tough to get to everything
You may at least need to jack it up and pull a mount off to paint around that. Factory painted them with flywheel, oil filter but no accessories in place.

Which paint company has the closest color for my 67 Firebird? I see a lot of ads for our metallic blue color but I want one that lasts as well.
Thanks! Eddie |

I would also be interested to hear if you can paint the engine without removing it but I am skeptical

I've been looking at it. My thinking is, if i can see it, i can paint it. If I can't see it who cares. I bought the Hirsch paint mentioned below after reading up on it.

I have painted engines in the car before. I remove all the items you don't want painted and cover the frame , A arms and any thing else by folding aluminum foil over them. It works great. Joe

Does this paint have the slight green tint to it like I see on ALL 69 original motor parts or the standard light blue that is sold every where?

I've painted the engine without removing as well. You're right, you can't get to everything, but you can certainly get to everything viewable when the hood is up.
I used a spray bomb -- carefully masking everything. Get the car jacked up and you can get the oil pan, etc. It's not a perfect job but it certainly beats looking at chevy orange

Plasti-Kote #227 Pontiac Metallic Blue works for me. Make sure to shake it good.
I have detailed several cars using this in spray can. Just have to cover or tape off what you don't want paint on. Removing pulleys and brackets works best on the front. A little patience goes a long way! [email protected]

I use spray cans. You can spay every angle you need to. I have used spay tips with tubes ( wd 40, carb cleaner) to get to the remote spots. Joe

Dupli-color DE1616 is also a technically correct reproduction of the original color. I had my local O'Rielly store order me 3 cans and it laid down very well.

Well it took a while to get up my nerve. I took most everything off the top except the carb and everything off the front including pulleys, etc. I left the exhaust manifolds and oil pan alone. Used spray and brush on Bill Hirsch pontiac metallic blue. While I was at it I did all the engine bay, fire wall, radiator, etc. in satin black enamel. Masking and Patience are the key. I'm really happy with the outcome.
The paint near the exhaust ports and some spots on the intake are already taking on a nice burnt hue making it look more "original". I tried to attach my first jpeg here. |

. I also use 1616 and am working on getting my OHC painted while in the car. I have tested several Pontiac engine paint vendors and the 1616 paint seems to be the best so far. Plasticote although a nice paint does not lay the paint down with uniformity. It tends to glob the paint even when you change the speed of ho it is laid down. It is the brightest paint so far and does look pretty good unused. I have not painted the complete motor yet but I will post pics when it is done.FWIW it is worth I found ordering the 1616 paint much easier and cheaper at Amazon.

Looks good, I use the Plastikote 1616 and like it alot. Best engine color ever 66-70 . Now just lose the Edelbrock stuff and put a black small snorkel Bonneville style air cleaner and plain blue valve covers on it and move the ground cable to a studded front headbolt
