Manufacturers used to ship their cars with wax covering the paint to protect it as they were shipped on open air rail cars and trucks, unlike todays enclosed rail cars. If you cover your car with wax without wiping it off, it will look like the Mopars on the truck.

The second car carrier shot ties in with Pontiacs, PYer Keith Seymore and his old Uncle (IIRC) Joe. The truck in the 1968 ad is owned by FJ Boutell, a company that Keith's Uncle helped start up and drive for, and, a useless bit of trivia, is that the 70 Judge TV ad (where the drivers unload the Judge to take for a private test drive) features a FJ Boutell car carrier as well.

Check out how there is a Pontiac peeking out in the bottom corner of the first Pic as well! Cool old haulers. The way they packed the cars on those things is amazing. One Pic I saw had 4 big '66 cars on the top. I love it!

Did the Vegas have fluids in them when they were hauled this way? It looks like the guy is driving it up onto the ramp. If they did, how did the oil, coolant, gas, etc. not leak all over the place?

They waited until someone bought them, then they leaked oil, coolant, and gas all over the place.




I think they were shipped totally dry. Contrary to other people's opinions, I actually thought Vegas were pretty cool looking, just not engineered to last.

This had to be one of the coolest car haulers in history.

Mike, where did you find the picture of that Daytona? I know that car, it's the only one built in that color combination.

Some of my pictures of the same Daytona. Note the door looking darker in both of our pictures.
It was the only Coral Reef car with a white interior and white stripe. There were some with black stripes, but only one in white. In fact, there was a licensed diecast of that car made several years back. I know the owner that had it for many years, up until last year. He traded it to Legendary, who has since sold it.

The ones with the steel sleeves in them actually did pretty well. A friend of mine had a wagon. We got it up to 110 one time. The Cosworth thing was cool too.

That stacked hauler thing is insane. I have been wondering how long they let them sit after delivery before they cranked one up.

Every American car plant I was ever in drove their cars from the end of the assembly line to the holding lot. If you have ever seen the end of a car assembly line, you wouldn't forget it. There was oil, transmission fluid, anti-freeze etc all over the floors. The driver would jump in and slowly drive out of the fluids then nail it! It was always fun to watch. I was visiting various GM, Ford and Chrysler Plants from the early 70s to the early 90s in Northeast Ohio and the Detroit area. I am sure it is still done the same today.

I never did visit the Vega Plant. I think it was in Lordstown, Ohio. They could have done it differently.

Not sure where the 1969 Daytona pic came from, I think it was just a picture off the web while doing a Google search for images on '1969 Dodge Daytona'.

Is this the same car? Says it's the first off the assembly line.

Mike, not the same cars. I think that 1st production car is B5 Blue. The one you and I put up is Q5 Turquoise, some call it Coral. It is an automatic car. I just checked the Chargeregistry site and it lists one non-Hemi (440) Daytona registered in Q5, many more in B5.

A 1932-era parking lot. I believe these were around the New York area. The arm mechanisms to lift and lower cars often failed, stranding the customers cars until work crews could fix the hydraulics.

This was a local rug store. When someone had an unusual way to take a rug home, or they were simply going to strap the rug to their roof because they didn't have a truck or van, the owner would snap a photo. This photo was from the owners son.

Love those old dealership photos. My Blue GXP in sig photo came from Gay Pontiac. My 71 455 H.O. also came out of Texas - from Superior Pontiac in San Antonio. Anyone have any old photos of that dealership?

Does anyone remember the "Raiders Coach"? It was the show car for the band Paul Revere & The Raiders. They also did a video and song to promote the GTO Judge in 1969. It was powered by twin GTO engines.
