Question One Owner 1969 GTO Value Wanted

A man in my town has his 1969 GTO for sale that he purchased new. The car has not been cranked or driven in six months. I looked at the car yesterday and went back with my digital camera today and took a few photos of the car. It was green but the owner had it painted black ten or more years ago. I forgot to ask him how many miles are on the car but the odometer shows 52,000. He is going to look in his files to see what original paperwork he kept. What is a fair price for this car in today's poor economy? Was this car made the second week of July 1968 or the second week of July 1969? What do you see good about this car? What do you see bad about this car? Follow the link to my PhotoBucket album for more photos of this GTO.

Well, I guess that answers the question I asked in the other thread!
I don't see anything wrong with the car. It really looks to be in exceptional shape...as much as you can tell from photos.
In today's economy....this is just almost a WAG...Even though it's a base, auto GTO, I think it should go $15~$18K as it looks like a 'wash it and drive it' kind of car and it looks pretty well unmolested. More, if the options start pointing out some unusual or desirable features. Color change from an unpopular color is a slight (very slight IMO) problem.
Oh yeah, 07=July, B=2nd week.

The guy had the car 32 years, then decided to have it painted black? Was it in a wreck, did it need body work?
Really need more info, pics and know what condition the car is in? Painting it Black didn't help its value. Should have left it original as it looks like most of the car is.
Now is that 52,000 or 152,000. does he drive it less than average 1000 miles/yr or 3000/yr. If it was started 6mos ago that's nothing. It isn't like it was sitting 20 yrs.If it didn't set for 20 yrs I would be more inclined to say it has 152,000 miles unless he drove it 1000/yr or less. 152,00 would be a lot of worn out mechanical parts if not replaced.
Ball park would be $10,000-$20,000 depending on condition. You need to feel him out. Sometimes they will let them go cheap if he likes you and knows its going to a good home and will be taken care of. If you could get it for 6,000-10,000 it would be a good deal for you. But you don't want to insult him by offering too low. Need to know what he is looking for in price? Need to know more history about it.
Good luck

The owner told me $20,000. I think that is way to much. Midnight green is one of my least favorite colors. Flowjoe told me this morning it was born a triple green car. To me that hurts its value. I did not ask if the car had been wrecked.

He said the car had not been driven on a regular basis in many years. A car that sits for long periods of time will have mechanical issues that cost money to fix. It is always better to drive a car.

Sorry, Missed that you had added pics. But I saw none of the inside trunk? Looks like it might be 152,00 from brake pedal wear in the pics, Back pass.side behind door looks like bodywork done, Paint peeling off rear inside wheel well, couple rust spots in the rear trunk lid or is that dirt? leaves laying on windshield cowl vent could mean leaves in front rocker which causes them to rust out, common problem, but have they been repaired.
like I said you need to talk with him more so you know more history.

I've seen some really nice cars on here that members had completely restored, all surface rust fixed, excellent body work and paint jobs, mechanical parts all in new or working order go for less. cars completely gone thru and fixed better than when they came off the showroom floor. For $20,000 its going to be there for a while.

That is dirt on the trunk lid and leaves are in the front rockers.

What is a fair price for this particular car based on the knowledge provide in this thread?

Maybe I've read it wrong but I decode the trim tag as follows:

256 = Green interior
57 = midnight green paint
G = green vinyl top

As to the possibility of it not being driven more than 52K in 42 years, well, I have a '69 with just over 50K on the clock...and I know where it has been since June of 1970 (when my folks bought it with just over 17K miles on it) so it is possible (I also have a '69 Camaro with 64K on the odometer FWIW). Both of those cars have received repaints.

I interpret the 07B build date as July of '69...as I think model year production did not start until late August/early September...correct me if I'm wrong.

Did you look at the photobucket pics? I hope it's worth more than that. If that car is only worth $7500, mine must be worth about $1200 and my '66 must be worth about $400.
I think $20K is too high but that thing's gotta be worth $13~$14K unless there are some surprises hiding.

So Flowjoe confirms it is only 52,000 miles. Its a nice car, but nothing has been done to stop the light surface rusting on the undercarriage, if left unchecked it will only continue. 52,000 miles is when a lot of mechanical problems could start, brakes, master cylinder, fuel filter, ball joints, etc.
So I would tend to head more towards marxjunk figures, so I would think marxjunk high figure to Greg Reid First low figure. But as marxjunk says why settle...have some patience and get what you want.
As soon as you would buy it, then another will come along that you would have rather had.
Evidently you must not have looked very long or you wouldn't be asking what this is worth. Keep looking, make notes and records of all you checked out and when the right deal comes along you will know it. Remember these are only our opinions and the only opinion that matters is your own!
Good luck and let us know what you finally get.

My 1969 Oldsmobile 442 convertible was produced the second week of July 1969 so both these cars were produced the same week but at different factories.

Whoa! I can't confirm or deny that it is a 52K mile car - I was just saying that is possible and even probable, that's all.

FWIW I'm with Greg Reid on pricing (maybe up to $15K) with the same caveat - if everything checks out and there are no surprises.

I agree - it's more rusty underneath than I would prefer to see but that's not a deal killer necessarily.

The car in question has had the MC replaced - that's not an OE unit. FWIW, my '69 has it's entire brake system intact an unchanged since new - and will still lock 'em all up and bring it to a screeching halt. It all depends upon how the cars are maintained and driven - I'm guessing that an adult owner for 42 years means no serious thrashing...and the car doesn't look it.

I'm more puzzled over the interior color change - lot of work/money. WASP, are you sure it's not dark green? I parted out a '69 'Vette with dark green interior once...it'd sat so long the interior looked black until I started cleaning it to sell.

That car is a low quality repaint with mud cracking out of the usual rusted areas. Triple green car that had the interior painted black, you can clearly see green showing through a few scratches on the interior shots, A/C, auto... not the most desirable thing. But it has hideaway's, I assume it's number's all match and it's a one owner car.
I'd guess 8k to 12k based on what I've seen. Although that appears to be in nice driver condition, it needs a full resto to be really nice, after the resto it would only be worth 24,000.00 on a good day.

I sold my Expresso Brown/Parchment '69 recently for $14,500. It had all the options this one had. It was a rust free California car, but had several dings and needed paint. Unlike this one, I had thousands $ in mechanical work into it and it ran great. Without this one even running you will have to assume it will need everything, from engine rebuild, carb, trans, brakes, exhaust, gas tank, suspension, etc.

Even so, a lot of buyers dont add all this up, and I wouldnt be surprised to see this one sell for $14K if it was cleaned up and running good. Its a decent car in an affordable range where a lot of people figure they can put money into it over time. Midnight green is a nice color. When the wheel molding is missing, be suspicious of poor qtr patches that don't let the moldings fit anymore.
