I broke my A/C diaphragm switch that is on the heater/AC unit on the firewall. This part has to be bolted on from the inside of the box and hooked up to a lever. My question is, what is the easiest way to replace this switch? Do I have to tear down all of the A/C and remove the whole box? I guess this "box" as I call it is really called the evaporator (?).
Any help would be appreciated greatly.
Also, just what exactly does this switch do?

It's not a switch at all. It's an actuator that moves the air recirculation door when you call for max A/C ("Inside" on the A/C control). They are available repro. Also, if you're game to look for one in the boneyard, that same actuator was used on B and C bodies in the 70's. On those cars, it's located on the interior A/C housing, next to the gas pedal. Because it's inside and not exposed to heat, they last forever in that location.

To change yours, unbolt the blower housing from the firewall and then unbolt the actuator. The evaporator is in the RH cowl on your car, so you don't have to disturb any of the refrigeration components. You MAY need to pull off the heater hoses to get the blower housing off.

Also located on all A bodies with a/c 68-72 behind the passenger side kick panel.

You must unbolt the blower housing from the firewall to change out. One or two bolts are tough, but can be done with the fender still on the car.

Is that one the same as the '66-'67 with two vacuum nipples?

I forgot to say the car is a 67 GTO. Yes, the actuator has two vacuum nipples on it. I appreciate the info on replacing the part. I thought that I had to remove the blower housing; I just hope I can do that without tearing down the A/C stuff.
