My 71's shaker still has it's original paint on it as it has never been messed with and the car has been in storage since the late 80's early 90's I can take a pic of it after cleaning the dust off it if anyone would like. The car is a 1st week of sept 70 norwood built car. Mark

I ask this because my PHS hardly list any information on it that isn't marked out with a marker. I don't understand why they (factory) did that.

i recently did a cosmetic detail/resto. on this 70's vintage funky painted shaker assembly. this came off a 72 and was from the Original Owner who kept all these years long after getting rid of his car. (i think it got wrecked)

the paint around the 455 H.O. is still the factory original blue metallic.....

Go with the Lucerne blue. It looks fine even though it doesn't match the stripe. GM would never had special paint to paint the shakers, not their style.

Here is what is left of the original paint on my shaker. I left this small area so I could match it when it came time to paint it. I actually don't like when people match it to the stripe. When you do that, the shaker sort of disappears.

I had to endure 5 years of hell from an arrogant, ego maniac boss who was never man enough to admit when he was wrong. He croaked 6 years ago, I hated it for his family, but I don't miss him a damn bit!

Okay...so what if it was Lucy Blue. To tell you the truth Craig, the more I thought about what you said, the more it made sense to me. I may just shut up and let my body man repaint the shaker to match the stripe.

Add one more for Lucy Blue. My 72 had the stripes painted over & the scoop was spray bombed black when I bought it in '81. I carefully wet sanded the black paint down to the original color on the scoop & it matched the Lucerne Blue paint chip perfectly.

Certainly makes the most sense.
Ill add, I think that the Lacquer paint, faded, hides some of the metalic at a distance when viewing it.

Well... not sure if this will help or not. Probably just stir the pot a little more. Last year at the T/A Nationals John Schinella spoke for about an hour and took questions afterward. It was very informative and I learned a lot. The best part was that the presentation inculded early reditions of several different hood bird designs that they created.

I wanted to ask this same question as it comes up all the time and I have heard valid arguments for both cases.

While I didn't get to ask him while he was on stage, afterward I approached him one on one and asked the age old question " what color was the shaker on the white cars? Lucy blue or the stripe color?". Without hesitation he said it was the stripe color.

Since I have heard it "straight from the horses mouth" so to speak, I would have to accept John's intent from the design room. But personally I like the look of the lucy blue rather than the sea green myself . Hopefully I can find a Lucy blue Car and then it will be an easy choice.... the shaker will be white.

It wouldn't surprise me if some were Lucy blue, and some weren't.

Think of all of the other items that changed or varied through the years. And since painting shakers was new to Pontiac at the time, and pretty low volume in the big scheme of things, I could imagine they may have tried some different things.

To bring up a sore subject ChatGPT says they got the information from PHS and says the scoop should be Lucerne blue on a 1971 but not full gloss. It should be flattened 30 to 40%. Does that make sense to anybody? I have a 71 with the original scoop, but the shaker door fits terrible so I'm buying one of the aftermarket cheap. units since I can't find an original. I am going to paint it. The current one on my restored car matches the stripe, but I think I'm going to paint this one Lucerne blue but just not sure if I should flatten it a bit or not. Does anybody have information on that thanks.

i have owned numerous original paint 70-72 ta's. with lucerne blue cars there are definately different shades of the blue. mainly some darker than others. on the white cars i have noticed the same thing with the hood scoops some a little darker than others but i believe them all to be a shade of lucerne blue. i have attached a picture of one of my cars that i bought from the original owner around 45 years ago and its totally original and hasnt ever been stored outside. although it has at least 37 years of dust on it (hasnt moved an inch since 1988) you can clearly see the different color of the stripe and scoop and the scoop is lucerne blue.
ps- the hood is just not shut all the way is the reason for the big gap.

Random trivia....all of the GM divisions used the same blue but had different names for it. Same code. I found this out when I asked my painter friend to paint a scoop Lucerne Blue and gave him the code. Turns out he already had some of that color from an Olds 442 job.
