dont you have AAA ? get discount tickets ? I buy mine thru my work , they sell us dicounted tickets as a bennefit , first run movies $5.00 , amusement parks , waterparks , even boston duckboats , baseball , deep sea fishing , assorted costs , but good discounts , love my job sometimes ...

I go only rarely as I put in a nice home theater setup. The price doesn't bother me much (I spend much more on my firlfriend when I take her out to dinner), but I can understand how parents with kids could be taken aback. One of the most successful theaters around here shows 2nd runs at low cost and offer food. Because of changes in technology, I believe theaters will be a thing of the past within the next 10 years.

A guy i used to know managed a movie theatre - he said that the theatre makes nothing from the film; all of the revenue comes from the concession stand.

I agree, going to the movies with a family of four is now out of the question except for certain few and far between movies. Most of my movies come out of the redbox machine these days.

I feel the pain as well.... Do any of you guy's have a budget movie theater by you ? The cost is a couple of dollars per person regardless of age. The only thing is popcorn and soda is still priced high. The movies themselves that are at the budget are older,but before they hit the DVD rack. But at least you can have a movie nite. Just a thought.....

Gentlemen:

It does not take many movies to pay for a big screen TV and HD DVD player given the cost to go the traditional threater.. I only go to maybe one or two movies a year anymore. Between redbox and no line sources, I find no real need. Take a family four to the show will cost you every bit of fifty to sixty dollar here in southern ca.

In other ten years, you will be able to get the new monies on the same day as they open in the threaters. Just like Blockbuster - the traditional threaters will not last if their prices continue to increase.

At least when I spend money on my pontiac I have something to show for it.

I know I'll be called Capt Buzzkill for this post, but here goes.

While I don't like paying the prices as much as the next guy, we need to understand what is driving the costs and how theaters work.

• For first run movies, the production house (Sony, MGM, Columbia, whomever...) receive nearly all of the revenue for the first two weeks, then they drop their revenue demands, per week, on a sliding scale.
• The independent theater makes up for the difference with high-margin snacks. Since you're a captive audience, they know you can't run out to the store to get food once you're inside.
• The dollar is trading at a horrible rate now (not worth very much) so it take more benjamins to purchase, finance movies and pay actors, promotional costs and distribution

Overall, I don't purchase food at the theater when I'm able to go.
