Thanks for that link and tip!

"On the 100 to 250 range temp gauge, the hash marks are as follows:
100, 190, 210, 230, 250. I don't know if this is exactly what GM intended, but based on bench testing, this is what I surmised. It seems to be plausible since the hash marks space out evenly passed 190.

Took the 72 T/A out for a spin in the inferno better known as New Jersey, today.

The car uses its original, four-speed radiator (no trans cooler) that was recored with a modern three row, copper core.

Here's some temp samples taken with a heat gun:

Outside Temp: 102 degrees
Pavement Temp: 121 degrees
Pass-Side Radiator Tank Temp: 153 degrees
Dr-Side Radiator Tank Temp: 183 degrees
Thermostat Housing Temp: 197 degrees

A/C on Max, center outlet temp: 35 degrees :-)

Factory temp gauge reading: 1 millimeter past the first hash mark (I can just see the hash mark to the left of the indicator needle)

I just ordered a new 4 core copper replacement for the 70, it will be here on Monday. I'm going to flush the system with the old radiator and then install the new. I'm going to send the original that now has a a 3 core and get it recored with a Modine. Since I did have it recored once awhile ago with its present 3 core I am assuming that the guy used the same kind of core that was originally in it but I don't know for sure. Anybody know for sure what I should have 3 or 4?

My original four speed radiator was a three core, even with a/c. I asked my radaitor guy to make it a four core but he said the tanks were too narrow for that. He did say the modern cores are more efficient and the three core he used had the same, if not better cooling capacity than a traditional four core. From the way the car runs, i believe he was right.

Ill second what Steve said, I had a 3 core as well and went to get it re-cored into a 4, and the guy said the same thing, the cores are bigger and more fins. Then he said I could buy a reproduction off shore 4 core that looks correct for the same price as a re- core.
so I bought it and love it, but I also run a good size tranny cooler in front of it, and no AC, "yet"

There's nothing like A/C for us old guys that need constant refrigeration, (otherwise we'll spoil).

Today's 72 T/A Temperature Update:

Outside Temp: 92 degrees
Pavement Temp: 110 degrees
Pass-Side Radiator Tank Temp: 138 degrees
Dr-Side Radiator Tank Temp: 178 degrees
Thermostat Housing Temp: 185 degrees

Factory gauge reading: directly on the first hash mark

A/C still blowing nice and cold :-)

So there you have it, I guess the first hash mark is 185, even though it is exactly halfway between "100" and "210" on the dial.

Put in my new $185.00 delivered to my door AdvanceAutoPart direct fit 4 row radiator today. My drive home in Chicago rush hour traffic is about 25 min. outside temp is 86 today, stop and go for most of the 12 mile trip but speeds from 0 to 50. Right now I'm pretty happy the gauge never went above the first line. We will see in the weeks to come.
