All my conversations with John has led me to believe it was an original ducktail car. The reproduction duck tails were molded from his tail. You know John Mike? has things changed over the years? last I saw him was in Mich at the woodward dream cruise in '02. met him in Wichita '98. he pulled that car with a chevey S-10!!

The Sundance Orange GTO of John's was a PMD company car. If I remember serial # is fairly low. That car was sold as a company car to the dealer in Minonk,Illinois(central Illinois).I remember car from around 1974 and it had 'ducktail' spoiler always on it. It bounced around owner to owner (some of which I knew) between Streator and Joliet ,Ill until John purchased.I always thought it was original due to company car and early VIN, I had the PHS pulled years ago and it didn't list spoiler. Also,I remember car had Custom Finned wheel covers back in mid '70s. Crazy options including power windows,tilt wheel but had black walls and small standard caps original.

I believe spoiler has -always- been on car and was installed by Pontiac when it was a company car. It is just not in my opinion one of the -2- assembly line produced. Takes away nothing from rarity of car with an original spoiler.

Just checked his profile .... says he has a 1970 Lemans 2 Door.

Yes, I bought this WW5 in August '77 at age 17 ( at the start of my senior year of hs ) from the original owner, a gal. She special ordered it and it had 60,000 when I bought it and I just flipped the odometer over before I sold it in 1981 for about $4,000 around my 21st birthday.
In between '77 and '81. I swapped out the M22 for a 400thm, went through the 455HO and later painted it before I sold it. I also swapped back in the original M22 when I sold it too. It was about my 5th GTO but, my first really nice one.
It originally also had the side stripes. It also had aftermarket floormats that were black with red carpet inserts that I really liked. Have never seen another pair like them.
The int looks the same when I had it except for the floor mats and it looks like the dash has been changed ( no Pontiac letters above glove box ). I see someone also put on the 8" snowflakes. Those wheels are perfect for that car but, it always had 15" Rally IIs when I owned it.

This is one of the few cars I regret ever selling, have kept most of my others. I bought my current WW5 in summer of 1984.

I have not seen the car since early 1981 when I sold it. He says it needs paint. Hmm, I wonder if it is possible that it still has my paint job on it?

Here is a picture of me at 21 with that car right after I painted it and sold it. Even in 1981, the stripes were already discountinued from the dealer.

Here are a few pics of her in 1977 when she still wore her stripes. Even at 17, I owned multiple GTOs as most were really cheap. Shown 69 ht and 65 GTO conv. in background.

Note the large "GTO" decal on the deck lid and no 'ho' with it. This car had original paint at this time.



I have used all my Pontiacs, incl GTOs for towing since a teenager. I put a hitch on every one including that one. Here I towed my 69 GTO with 'glass flip top front end to Beeline dragway with it in early '78 while in High School.

PB, yes, I know John well. We used to hit cruise nights together. Back in 1999, Tom Shaw from Muscle Car Review came up from Florida to photograph our cars for the cover(s) of Muscle Car Review Magazine.

And yes, John did remove his spoiler to use as a pattern for the repro ducktails. I recall that John also installed a 455HO intake on his car in the early 2000's (his car is a 400) to add some eye-candy under the hood, and about that time, he installed the side stripes.

There were 2 documented Lemans GT's built with the ducktail spoiler, no 72 GTO's. As supercarbob stated (and he knows these cars well, he sold 'em!), according to the PHS, John's car did not have a spoiler listed on the invoice.

That's all I was saying when I said his car is not "an original ducktail spoiler car", meaning it wasn't built as such. But his ducktail IS an original, no way a repro. Now whether John's spoiler was put on in 1972 by a dealer, or sometime in the 70's, no one really knows, but it wasn't built as a ducktail spoiler GTO.

I miss John at the cruise nights, but I know his first priority is raising a family now. I remember how many times kids would come by and yank on his Tiger Tail sticking out the back!

ahh..okay..that was the story I recall now too. I did not know the two that were built were GT cars. Does anyone know the whereabouts of these two cars, or their VIN numbers? Someone pull the PHS on them? John's a great guy, tell him I said Hi if you run into him again.

I was ALL over his car in '98 Wichita show. I was dumbfounded, as I think he was that he didn't win anything. I don't think the car got the attention it should have, but goes to show you that not many know the quirks that are 1972 Pontiac GTO! They are now from all these recent threads!! That's what I love about 72's!

It was used for promotional purposes, part of the press fleet, so most likely had the spoiler attached post-build, and would not show a spoiler on the invoice. It was a black/black vinyl top, Ram Air 455 H.O car.

Has anyone ever spoken with Jim M. about this black (or Wilderness Green, perhaps?) WW5 GTO?

It would have to have been a VERY early build. It shouldn't be TOO terribly time consuming to search the microfiche records for a very early build, 2D37X WW5 optioned '72 GTO, especially if was really a special order paint (black) car.

The only problem I can think of is if this car was actually a pre-production car and never had a VIN assigned to it?
