Default Door Slamming ?

Why do people insist on slamming doors?

Here in Texas we mostly have brick exteriors and concrete drives which will resonate noise. We get the occasional truck exhaust or some car doors which I can understand. The neighbors have some fetish with putting their whole arm into slamming the front and garage door.

BOOM! even late into the night they will slam them.

Anyone have advice on soundproofing the attic space?

I feel your pain. My wife slams everything, cabinet doors, outside doors, car doors.

Lets go on a full roll here, What about people who I call "Teeters" everything they put down is right on the edge ready to fall or they place tools/parts right at their feet and step all over the stuff. Drives me crazy.

I think my car is 1/2 narrower because of door slamming. The microwave, kitchen drawers, refrig, dishwasher, front door, back door you name it if it has a hinge it gets SLAMMED.

Youngest daughter used to slam the door to her room. One day I took it off the hinges. Came home from work that night & it was back on. I took it back off & removed the lock & chained & locked it to the handle of my tool box in the garage. She didnt have a door for two weeks. No more slamming doors after I put it back on.

When I was little our family car was a '53 Mercury. My sister would slam the door on that car so hard she broke the window twice.

When I was about 10 I slammed a door in the house. Mom made me stand there and open and close it until she was satisfied there'd be no more slamming any door. You know, an hour of doing that is a long long freekin time.

I suppose if there is nothing I can do to stop the noise I could just join them. I'll set the alarm for 5am and get to slamming the doors.

I just moved out of an apartment complex with cheap brick 3-storie buildings. Four years of Hell because the sound of metal doors hitting metal door frames resonates through the (hollow) walls like clicking two rocks under water. Out of 17 units in my building, I was one of only a couple tenates that knew how to shut a door gently, so as not to desturb others.
Had more than a few upstairs neighbors that would let their kitchen cuboards Bonk shut every time too.

And yeah, there were the usual jerks in the parking lot that would SLAM trunks during sleeping hours. But the lazies with their key-fobs bleeting the horn at all hours pissed me off just as much.

I slam the doors on locomotives. But that only because they were made by GM and won't close or stay closed.

Now THAT was funny.

We used to have some Hispanic neighbors, and of course they had their "extended" families living with them. Morning, noon, and night there were car door slams from their house, and their driveway was of course right outside our bedroom window.

One Sunday afternoon, I decided to watch to see why the hell they slam so many door, everyday.

The mother, father, a 10-year old son, and a little baby in the mother's arms came outside. The mother opens the rear door on their Oldsmobile, then closes it, SLAM! She decides to put the baby on the other side. She opens the other door, puts baby in car seat, and SLAM! The 10-year old gets in on the other side, and SLAM! Then the mother gets in on the passenger side, and SLAM! The father gets in the driver's side, and SLAM! They start the car, then the 10-year old gets out because he forgot something, and SLAM! (why he couldn't have just left his door open for a couple seconds, we'll never know). Then he comes back to the car, gets in, and SLAM! They start to back out, then stop. The mother gets out, and SLAM! She goes to the back of the car, needs to get something out of the trunk. The auto trunk button doesn't work (or they don't know they have one), so the father has to shut the car off to get the keys out of the ignition. He gets out, and SLAM! They open the trunk, the mother gets a blanket out, and the trunk lid comes down, SLAM! Then the mother gets back in the car, SLAM! The father gets in the car, SLAM! They start to back out, then stop, they forgot to close their garage door. The 10-year old gets out, and SLAM! He closes the garage door, then gets back in the car, SLAM!

They finally leave. They're only gone for about 15 minutes, maybe went to McD's.

That's 13 door slams, and all they were doing was leaving their house for 15 minutes.

They come back, and the 10-year old gets out, SLAM! The mother gets out, SLAM! She gets the baby out of the back seat, SLAM! The father gets out, SLAM! They all walk into the house. 10 seconds later, the father walks out, opens the driver door, looks for something, then SLAM! He walks around to the passenger side, opens the passenger side door, and gets the blanket out that the mom left in there. SLAM! Then he opens the trunk, and puts the blanket in there. SLAM!

And they used to go out 2 or 3 times everyday like that. And then you had their extended families doing the same thing multiple times per day.

That's America today. No one is considerate enough to think they may be annoying someone else. They live in their own little world.

You have to go a little further here, slamming doors is learned by having to operate doors that are misadjusted or need lubricated. This is because people are either too lazy or not smart enough to make the doors operate properly, and of course no one ever wants to repair the doors because they're either too lazy to go get some WD 40 or too lacking in knowledge , or lazy to tighten and adjust the door so you don't have to slam it to get it to close.

I have to ask when is the last time you ever had a car serviced that the lubed the strikers and the door hinges. When I started my apprenticeship as a mechanic the first job I had was on the grease rack at a Pontiac dealership, you better have done all these and the hood and trunk hinges and latches or you were going to get your butt chewed out for not doing your job. Today it never happens when a car is serviced and same as most things today no one takes any pride in their work and everyone is in such a hurry it gets overlooked. To me it's just our culture and lack of pride, common sense and courtesy, but that's just my opinion.

In the move Gran Torino Clint Eastwood had it summed up pretty well when he talks to the young Laotian boy and instructs him how to repair and take care of the home he lives in. He makes the comment that he takes care of his property as everyone in his era did and learned to repair and maintain things, not today, if it don't fit force it..............

After slamming the door shut on my Grandfather's 62 Chrysler 300, his wrath cured me of slamming doors on cars!
