Default Disk Brake Conversion for 1970 GTO

I've seen several older Threads on this subject of Disk Brake Conversions, but with newer technologies are out there. That being said, I was wondering if anyone could steer me in the right direction!!
I would like to do a disk brake conversion on my 1970 GTO, but need advice on what to buy and what trouble if any on using original parts.
Is there a kit to use GM OEM original equipment. would like to be able to use original 14" wheels so I'm not upgrading and limiting myself to certain wheels.

Stock 70 model 14" wheels will clear the oem '69-72 A-body GM disc brackets. The reason 14" wheels are mentioned as not fitting in these "kits" is the early 4 3/4 bolt pattern drum brake wheels ('64-68) will not clear with oem disc brakes. By making a blanket statement, these companys are just watching out for themselves. Personally I will not use the Chinese disc spindles or the cheap aftermarket caliper brackets. I do buy repro dust shields, as they present no problems for most restorers. Only exception, for a cutting edge concours resto, they are not correct, incorrect finish & no stamped part numbers.

You pretty much answered your own question. I would watch craigslist or ebay for an OEM 69-72 setup - not the Chinese crap currently offered.

I put an ad on craigslist for disc brake spindles wanted and had several responses within a few days. I used repro disc brake mounts and dust shields. I used the wilwood calipers but could have used regular calipers.

You could also go with these guys:

http://ecihotrodbrakes.com/early_che...nversions.html

They are not cheap (575 for the kit), but use aluminum hubs with the early or late bolt pattern. ECI has a good reputation in the street rod industry, well built stuff that works.

I was told that the only difference between the drum brake spindle and the disc brake spindle is the upper bracket mount. In the past I had seen companies that sell disc brake kits that would modify your spindles, but I can't remember the company.
The disc brake spindle is machined about 1/4" deeper to accomodate the thickness of the bracket. Marc at SC&C told me that 'you could use a grinder to modify the spindles if you measure carefully'. I got factory ones instead of modifying mine.

Good luck,
Mike

Just use your existing spindles and grind mounting point down till the backing plate can sit flush. If you go in the Street section here in the Stickies there is a whole thread detailing the swap.

whatever you do..DO NOT buy the chinese backing plates/caliper mounting brackets.

I did that and the passenger side one flexes a little bit causing my piston to have to use more fluid, in turn causing me to need a larger bore master cylinder. (Which in my case with manual brakes makes the pedal effort harder)

moral, don't buy the Chinese stuff!

I have power brakes. Drum brakes want to leave drum brakes on back and disk on front

I've purchased from them. Extremely knowledgeable, and the stuff is quality.

They're legit.

Back to the OT, why not just use the Scarebird brackets? You can source your own parts.

I'm doing it with 69-71 GTO parts, with 11" rotors for my 15" wheels, but I'm pretty sure you can get parts to clear 14" wheels.
