I remember back in the late 60's some cat came to town with a white 66 442 post, 4-speed, and poverty caps, looked like a taxi cab. We had some pretty fast cars around town then, a couple 396/375 Camaro's, a Hemi Charger that was optioned to the hilt, a Stage 1 Buick, and I can't remember the rest. We had one guy with a very fast 65 GTO tri-power,but he was on his honeymoon. We also had a very fast 66 427 Chevelle with 4:56 gears but none of the before mentioned cars could take the GTO. The 442 guy parked his car as far away at the drive-in where we all use to meet as possible. He said he would take on all comers for 100.00 a run. I sneaked off down the parking lot and looked inside the car. When I saw the radio delete I kept my money in my pocket. The only car that beat the 442 was the 66 Chevelle by less than a fender length. When the 442 ran the Chevelle the 442 guy said he floated the valves in third gear.I love my GTO, but my second choice would be a 442.I would have loved to see the 65 Goat and 442 run.

Keeping with the BOP theme, I'm a diehard Pontiac guy but I got to drive a '67 Buick GS 400 during the spring fling at Dayona. What a fun car to drive. Felt just like a 64-67 GTO.

My roommate in college bought a 66 442 that was 2 years old I think at the time...maybe only 1...whatever. When he got it just had the poverty caps on it and it was a pretty basic car looking back. Light blue metallic 2 door post, black bench interior, hurst comp plus shifter, 3.91 ? posi. Ended up with 7 inch cheater slicks on the back except for winter, chrome wheels with somewhat narrow blackwalls on the front. I didn't have a musclecar myself, but was in tune with the whole scene and his car was "fast". At the time there was a Dodge-Plymouth dealer, Pont-Olds dealer and I think a Chev dealer. Job offers were plentiful to graduating college seniors so as soon as they thought they were going to get employed they would run down to a dealer and sign on the line for a muscle car....they were everywhere in that small town. As I recall my roomys 442 did quite well against most comers, including his brothers 68 442 which he always beat without exception.

The '68 442 was not an impressive car, as delivered. Compared to a '66, they were heavier, and the new for 1968 long stroke (read extremely oversquare) 400 never produced near the same performance as the "good" Olds 400.

Very true statement, in fact many Olds race teams at the time ditched the 68 and returned to the track with the cars they were campaigning in the years prior.

they are not cheap, in fact I bought a tri-carb intake manifold about 8 years ago for 950.00 alone.

Growing up on the west coast, I purchased my 66 tri-power GTO when I was 17 in 1980. Every morning on the way to school I met a 67 442 at the same intersection , same time everyday. Driven by "some old guy" we would race every morning, best races I ever had in my car, very close! The best part of the story, I still have my car... wonder what happened to the 442? Now, I am the "old guy"!

There were approximetely 2100 '66 Olds Tri Carb intakes made, so compared to the GTO TriPower, they are rare. Unrestored setups change hands at $2600 plus all day long. I have seen $3750 for a complete restored setup on E-bay.

When I worked at the Framingham BOP palnt in 1972, I used to carpool with a guy who had a 67 442 with a 400/TriPower/4 Speed/3.90 rear end.
There was always street racing when work got out (second shift). One night, we raced a 68 Z28, and we took him by about car length. My 71 Charger R/T was never beaten from a 20 MPH roll...... ![]() The parking lot was full of muscle cars....did you ever see a 70 T/A Challenger, all black, including stripes? |

What difference would that make? I have 2-4 lifetimes of projects to do and will never finish. I do not care, when I croak, the next guy can play with them. In the meantime, I am a 'pig in mud'.

was it a documented black? i used to own a white with black one that i bought from the original owner (he was a service manager of the local dealer) it had literally every option offered and he even had the receipt where the dealership added a/c to it when it had somewhere around 10 miles on it. it was mint and i wish i had never sold it.

I agree the 1966 cars are a bit of an acquired taste, but when done correctly they are quite stunning. They were excellent performers right out of the gate! The added classy Oldsmobile appointments made for a great driving and comfortable riding car.

Thank you for the kind words…the 66’cars are part of a good friend’s collection. He has a large stable of all year Oldsmobile performance. Many are 1970-72 W-30 convertibles restored to the highest standards. The two in the picture are both original L-69 cars.

I'm kinda partial to the '66-'67s myself. This is the only non-Pontiac I own:
![]() The Cutlass Supreme came from one junkyard, the 442 hood came from another, where it was being used as a walkway over a mud pit. My dad has a '67 442 hardtop that his dad bought new in '67.
