If you're throwing the old shocks out, I'd use vice grips to hold the shaft up top while you loosen the nut. That's just me though.

Thanks Bob, thats actually what I did but the nut was acting as if it were welded to the stud. I stripped that top part off with the vice grip. I am throwing these away, they arent original equipment so I'm not interested in keeping them.

Did all Super Duty's come with Positraction? I only ask because last night I "accidently" got on it. It was pretty smokey when I came back to that position, I then noticed only 1 wheel was creating that smoke. I'm not sure if I have a problem...

I definitely have the G80 option, I'll have to have this looked at, I just probably have something wrong. I do think it's wierd that a SD left the assembly without posi. It seems like they'd all have the G80 option.

As I remember all Trans Am' s were factory equipped with posi. All other firebirds regardless of engine it would have to be ordered.

A bit off-topic for this thread, but as I recall there WAS a model year or two that G80 was optional the 2nd gen T/A. 1976 comes to mind . . .

Worn out clutches in the diff. Not at all uncommon on a 40 year old car . . .

Next time you want to smell tire smoke try brake torquing that diff. "Brake torquing" increases the diff posi clutch pre-load and helps to make both tires spin . . .

For the front shocks, I just place a deep well socket with extension on the nut and bend it back and forth until it snaps.

I did'nt know that until now.I thought the same way that all SD's came with a posi,but I just looked at my original widow sticker and "whammm" there it is Safe-T-Track- diff. $43.00 option.

Where can I find the proper part number for the clutch plate assembly? I've searched online, I feel like I cannot find the same answer twice. Any suggestions from you experts? I really appreciate the help guys!

The clutches ARE most likely available for that differential, however . . .

It's NOT a real easy job to replace them, I'd recommend replacing the entire posi diff.
