Default fan change on alternator

I purchased a single wire alternator to use in my 67 Lemans. I has the plastic type of fan on the front. Can I change this fan to the metal type that is used in 73? It looks like it would fit but I am unsure how the new type works.

The experts here can tell you for sure, but I don't think there should be any issues with changing. I've heard of - but never personally seen - problems with the plastic fans anyway, so a change might actually be a good thing. nk

Can you post a picture of the plastic fan? Most times if it is the new style, it is NEEDED to cool the alternator and going backwards will ruin your new alternator.

If it IS the same fan just plastic, then yes you can swap them. You will need a 3/4" wrench and a 5/16 allen key. Hold allen key and twist nut off.

If it is STUCK, you can use an air gun to break the bolt. I have done this a few times with no ill effects.

Sand and paint that old fan before you move it..LOL!!!

No, you should leave that fan on. It will cause an issue if you put the metal one on.. IMHO.

Stick with the "plastic" one.that's the style that Delco went to when they made the 12SI series alts that have higher output. Th newer fans afford better cooling for the higher output alts. I would not put the previous design metal fan on the newer alt.

The plastic fan is cool, but don't pry on it, that would be uncool.

Just be sure to use the right stack of fan spacers that GM used for proper backspacing.
