I was wondering what you guys do to your cars to make them more secure when you stay overnight at a car show and you have to leave the car outside all night. If you don't have a trailer to put it in or on a trailer. I know locking the doors but thieves get around that. I will be taking my convertible and I know in the last few years I've read on here people getting cars stolen even while still in the trailer. Any ideas I should use or to do to secure my car? Thanks. Jason

Short of locking up the vehicle in a building, there really isn't a way to secure your car. If the thief wants it bad enough, they will get it.
A hidden kill switch might deter the amateur crooks, but they will still damage your car to get into it. Make sure all of your valuables are out of it, lock it up and make sure your insurance covers you.

When a group of us from the club are going to a show and staying overnight we look for a hotel that can set aside a section of the parking lot/parking garage just for our cars. Most places are receptive to this and will usually offer to have their security guards pay extra attention.

Stash a cell phone connected to constant power with location feature. Hopefully you will discover car missing before thief discovers cell phone.

Like already said, theres not much you can do. If they want it bad enough, its thiers. Also look out for vandals. My 66 got the whole side of the passengr side kedyed at the 2004 GTOAA Nats. They got three other show cars that same night.
I can assure anyone planning on coming out to the POCI Convention here in St Charles that we have plenty of off duty police officers gaurding the grounds. Nothing is 100% effective, but they've been working with us for The Indian Uprising for many years. All Ican say is that I wouldnt want a run in with these guys. |

It's tough to move when it won't start. Pull the first few plugs/wires.
Would take only a few minutes to put back in and odds are they won't be carrying extra plug wires with them.

I don't worry about someone hot wiring my car. Way faster to just tow it. Ever watch a repo guy?

There was a story on another post where a guy goes to a show and takes his distributor cap. His car gets stolen and at the other end of the parking lot there is a guy where someone stole his distributor cap.

dealing with a fleet at a college I have discovered one truth. If someone wants it, they will do what they can to get it. The harder it is to steal the more damage they will do. I know it sucks but insurance is the only weapon you have against theft/vandalizm.

Does anybody sell those boots they use for parking violations?

I generally don't worry about it. If it isn't safe enough for my car to sit outside, its not safe enough for me to sleep inside.

Piece of 1/2-5/8 cable with loops swedged on each end and a circular disc lock holding the loops together attached to something immovable or another car and then around the frame. Not fail safe, but I think most thieves would move on to something easier.
Ways to defeat it are a cutting torch or an abrasive cutting wheel, either are noisy and will more than likely be noticed at night with the shower of sparks being thrown. There is also a motion detector type of alarm that you can put in the car that will call your cell phone or police or any number you program into it. The dialing unit can be kept in the room, the sensing unit in the car, there is no way to stop it once it's disturbed and it's wireless and the sensor has a self contained battery in it.They're used to secure construction sites and they also have a home unit. I looked into them before and of course it's not cheap, but neither is replacing your pride and joy. Hope maybe one of these things is helpful to someone here. These days you even have to worry about what's in the room with you. Tuesday night my sister and brother-in-law were robbed while they were sleeping in a hotel in Myrtle Beach. They were on the third floor and left the patio door open not realizing until later it was pretty easy to get in from the outside.

A quality alarm with motion detection and notification and quality insurance.
All you can do is control your surroundings. Better neighborhood, good lighting, in plain view, etc. |
