THanks for the info guys.

I do see the 850 came with jet sizes almost 10 larger than the 750 stock.

70/80 with power valve in front only. 4779-2
80/80 with power valve in both. 4781-2 ( 10 larger in front, added PV in rear).

I actually use maxjet jets, which are supposedly more Precise.

They size their numbering goes along with orifice or Holley flow equivalent or something like that.

According to maxjet it 93/97 would be about 83/87 in Holley size.

But who knows if it works, it works. I will try it.

Ok guys, got back out to the track tonight. Last time out I had mounted and wired the holley black fuel pump, but did't have it plumbed in. Last night, I plumbed it in, inline with the Robbmc 1000HP mechanical. Also put the new drag radials on. Same size as before.

Last time out it was in the 80s and the car went 11.64 at 114.0

Today was 70s, first two passes, the car went 112.8. But we ran an 11.64 at 112.8, which is kind of impressive in a twisted way. We then found the fitting at the inlet to the mechanical pump was leaking. And with electric force feeding it, it was leaking. So we replaced the fitting.

Next run was 11.52 at 114.2 (so basically back where we started). Now for the first three runs we had the air filter off and were shifting around 5400 to 5500.

For the last run we put our 10x3 air filter back on and left the car in drive, where it shifts about 4900. The car ran 11.56 at 114.1

So the pump didn't make any difference it doesn't appear. the car will run the same et shifting under 5K with a tiny air filter as it does with no filter and higher shift point.

The car went back to back 1.54 60's on the last two runs.

Next trick will be to try Cliffs 850 DP and see what that does for the car.

Here are some pics of the times lips and air filter.

http://s1208.photobucket.com/albums/...er_media_share

My brother was driving tonight, so I didn't get to watch the fuel psi. I don't know if it still drops. If it does, we could try bypassing the mechanical. I could also run the lines a little better, they have some un needed curves right now.

Overall, pretty happy with the car. Love what it idoes in drive with the airfilter. Just a little surprised it doesn't pick up without it. Will keep working on it.

Mike

The mechanical pump is just a stumbling block for the Holley black pump, I'd bypass it.

The big Holley is on it's way. Ray took it completely apart and replaced all the gaskets, two new needle/seat assemblies and cleaned it out.

We both spent about an hour scraping all the stuck gaskets (they were the blue no-stick variety) from all the parts.

The float adjustment gaskets were stuck in place as well, and of course the gaskets on the bowl screws had to be removed with a pocket knife.

Reminded of the good old days when I had my 1970 Roadrunner. I wore the bowl screws out on several big Holley carbs racing that car!

We hooked it up to my electric pump and set the floats, pumps worked fine, but didn't run it on my engine. Have fun with it!.......Cliff

Do you have any way to check voltage to the electric pump when you are on the way down the track?

I have a savant recollection of a guy who had the whole system totally sorted, but the car would just not deliver. Turns out the alternator belt was slipping and not delivering full voltage to the pump, resulting in inadequate fuel volume.

Dunno if this applies or not but you might check it if you can.

Awesome that you ran within a tick after 25 years!

Heavy race weight, not enough rear gear, and converter has too high a stall speed.
That's the issue. It 60 foots great, but there is way too much slip to get the mph up. Some 3.73 gears will really wake the car up.

Yes, I am sure I will hold the car back from ever reaching full potential. I upped the gear fr 3.23 to 3.42 but that is the most I will go, as I drive the car 5 hours on the interstate to Norwalk each year. As for the weight, probably won't get much better there either as I want to stay stock appearing for the most part. For the same reason, I won't run a sump for the tank. But I will try the electric pump, and I can even try bypassing the mechanical. I will also try a bigger carb and see what that does.

Will keep posting results for you guys

Take a little bit of axle grease with you .
I wipe a little on my gasket surfaces when
I change my jets on my holleys and it works
great. You'll be able to use your gaskets for
A long time and it won't clog anything up
either any resedue will wash true with no
problems.

Mike, I wouldn't worry about not having everything in the set-up "ideal". For what you and I are doing, our cars drive fine on the street and run at the roll bar rule at the track.

I stick with the wrong converter and 3.42 gears because I like driving the car, and it is very easy on fuel for "normal" driving. I'm just a 4200rpm's converter, 3.90 gears and set of full race slicks from high 10 second runs.

I could really care less about all that, the car starts with one blip of the throttle to engage the electric choke, idles down nicely after a minute or so, idle fine, drives as smooth as a 71 Catalina with a 400 2bbl engine in it, and runs under the roll bar rule at the track without too much effort.

My "tight" converter/3.42's has it laying out WAY too long in low gear, but once past 4000rpm's it races quickly thru 2nd and 3rd and still makes great runs at the track. Sure, the engine certainly wants more gear and converter, but that's not the point, I like it just the way it is, and completely happy with how it runs everyplace.......Cliff

Mike completely understand, as I also drive my car , not 5 hrs tho, although i could if i wanted too, as i get 12 mpg with a dominator! . My bigger 4200 convertor with only 3.73 gears is not slipping hardly at all at 65 mph! the formula shows it to be 2909 rpm's, I run 3000 grand! What do u turn now at 65 mph for rpms? FWIW When I had the 3.42 gears (Formula shows 2667 rpm's) and bigger conv it was turning 2800 rpm's, so u can see it is actually more efficient with the 3.73 now. I also ran my heavy car at the track with the 4200 conv and 3.42 gear and it was 10-11% . I tried all size tires, from 26, 28, and the current 29's, It is now down to about 5%. If it were my car and drive it like u say, and don't care about ever going faster, yea right ,lol. I would tighten up the convertor, and run faster with less slippage! Those conti's are tight! Love mine

Converter efficiency doesn't change unless you pull it out and have it tightened up some.

Running more gear or pushing less weight, or both, changes how heavily loaded it is at lower rpm's, so your aren't up against the full stall ratio of the converter nearly as hard or as long at lower rpm's.

The faster you spin the engine, and faster the vehicle moves, the less slippage will be noticed as it locks up tighter and isn't working quite as hard.....FWIW.....Cliff

Exactly, so why would u want to use a convertor that is slipping more than it should? Its all about combination and That combo would be better off with either more gear or tightening up the convertor and since he drives it as much as he does it would make more sense then to tighten it up.
Your car mike just giving my input.

Hey guys, I appreciate all the thoughts and input. I love talking our cars, and you have some sweet combos.

And you guys are also right, I may pull the converter and have it tightened up some day. I just got it last summer and just got it running in the car last July. But my combo wasnt as strong last year and the 10" conti was built for that combo. I am sure now, it would be done a little different if I have it redone.

So that could certainly happen, just not in a hurry to yank it out and send it our during the season.

On the interstate I normally cruise around 75 mph and it is around 3000 rpm.

Will keep you guys updated and also see you guys at Norwalk!

Mike

I'm running a similiar combo also,I'm approaching the roll bar rule with 3.42 gears and a 3200 Continental,I could go quicker with more gear, more convertor, slightly more compression, more cam, traction aids but I'm right where I want to be now.11.6/11.7 at mid 116's with a little tuning left to go.

Correct, but you are only using the 3200, compared to mike's 4000 + convertor, that is the only point I am trying to make here, and why his mph was down for having a engine that dynoed 550 hp! I understand everyone is happy with their combo's I am too
