Hey sometimes cash is King.
Just last week I bought a 94 Jeep Wrangler to use as a daily driver. The guy selling the car was from Lancaster PA about an hour and a half from me. I had him email me tons of pics of the underside of the car. We spoke on the phone several times. He made the mistake of letting me know that lots of people had called but no one had shown up. He was asking $2500.00 for the Jeep because the paint is older and faded and he did some minor body work and the cover up paint didn't quite match the old paint. I showed up with $2500.00 in cash in my pocket. The Jeep was everything he said it was. But yes the paint didn't quite match. So I said to him...look in order to make this look right, I'm gonna have to sand that area down and at that point I might as well shoot the whole Jeep. I told him I'd be willing to do the sanding and then have Maaco shoot the Jeep I asked if he'd take $2000.00 cash right now on the spot and he agreed. I think we both feel like we got a good deal. In asking for $2500.00 he probably had some wiggle room and I know that my buddy and I can shoot my Jeep with paint for a lot less than $500.00. In the internet driven work of wing nuts, scams, and loose screws, I still think that showing up with cash in hand is the best move.

I used to work with a guy like that. Anything you were selling, he could always find it cheaper somewhere else. But he never did. Selling a snowplow for $400.00? "well I can buy that for $325.00". But 6 months later, he would still be looking for a plow.....

Me not having to go to the bank, wait for a check to clear, or transfer funds from PayPal is worth a few bucks off to me.

I just haven't taken the buying or selling of these worthless items seriously for quite awhile.
Haggling should be fun for both sides of the deal, or don't bother. Don't be bothered. |

I just had 30x42 and a 40x 12 concrete pads poured.I have used the concrete company for my 30x40 polebarn floor. When he came to give me estimate he told me he would knock $200 off if I paid cash.

when i look at a add for a used item, I always assume they overprice it a bit so that it can be negotiated down from there. Some folks dont seem to follow that logic. haggling for a better deal is half the fun of buying used.

What I hate is someone wants you to give a price over the phone...so you give in and quote your bottom price. Then they show up and start negotiating from the bottom price agreed on over the phone.
Sheesh!!!!

I pay cash for everything i buy in person. I dont have any credit cards and the only time i use my debit card is to buy online. Heck i dont even know how to use my card to pay in a store, honestly.
I hate being in check-out lines waiting for people to decide if they want to pay,'debit or credit' and they say,'doesnt matter. Why cant they answer the damn question instead of say.'doesnt matter. And i get dirty looks quite often because im paying with cash. One cashier ask me, 'credit or debit',and i said is cash okay? she rolled her eyes and sighed. |

the nego over phone gets old. you have no idea what the part looks like in person. However, you can tell if they are busting balls. I have some fun,. who says the price has to go down.
Selling car for 2500 Them - whats your best price/ How much will you take. Me - For today only and just for you b/c I like you, I'll go 2850. Them - But thats more Me - Yes, 2850 is better than 2500 for me. Usually weeds out the tire kickers |

I get the cash thing constantly. At trade shows. In the retail store. Everywhere.
My price is my price and it's right. Simple. What I've found in the jewelry business is that even long time jewelers don't know what something is worth. I will not haggle with somebody that wants something for less and has no idea what it's worth to start with.

sometimes other things work
I called about a real rare and desirable jetski for sale right after the ad came out. Guy was nice enough, said someone else had already called but wouldnt be able to get there before Wed(it was Monday AM). He was going to call the guy back and tell him he had until the next evening to get there. I thought it was upstanding that he hold it for someone without even a hint of a deposit. When I called back later that afternoon to see if he had contacted the guy,he said he hadnt heard back from him yet.I then complemented him on being a man of his word, that I had so many people sell stuff out from under me on CL(even with a paypalled deposit). I then explained that alot of buyers are just BSers,as an example I have a golf cart on CL for sale and 2 people promised they would be right over to buy,and both never called or showed up.His reply was"you have a golf cart?I need a golf cart." We struck a deal that each traded for amount asking,I kicked in $200 for the difference and both went away happy. My boys both love this jetski ,as its a factory hotrod. Ill probably sell it this winter after weve had our fun,for about 4x the amount I had in the golf cart.
