The plate is to locate the engine in the car for better torque transfer by eliminating the flex in the engine mounts. The cracks in the block are caused from the internal stresses of the torque transfer through the block. If I remember correctly Pontiac's generally fail through the lifter galley and split lengthwise down the block. Think of the engine block as a brittle pop can and you grab the ends and twist it when you floor it. Uneasyrider

I made 889.4 with 445" - 1967 400 block with 990 crank and Wenzler Super Chiefs in 2004. That's 1.998. Went 5.45 @ 126 in eighth @2790#. I have dyno sheets and timeslip. Coincidentially, the heads and tunnel ram a I just listed the heads and tunnel ram in the parts section

We used this same block and crank in Stacy's Grand Am until 2010. The new RAV engine being done must be 2.9HP per cubic inch to be on top 2.7 to be competitive. With our existing ports 2.7 for this engine is very capable, we must work very hard to get 2.9. We will post this project as it happens. I think a mild set of RAV heads on a stock block 400 is worth 2HP per cubic inch.

It depends on the generation of block, how you machine it, and your tune. I routinely make ~1500 bhp and have run the same three factory blocks for the last 5 years. One gave up the ghost last year when we had a lean-out condition from a return poppet spring failure.

In 1971, my buddy Gordon, with "Diamond" RA-IV heads and a 366 Engine was CLOSE at 706 HP at 8500 rpm. He needed to make 732 hp to be at 2 hp per cubic inch. The engine had a tunnel ram and two 660 center squirters, but was NA on race gas.
Tom Vaught ps Marcella in another thread made over 2 HP per cid with his 481 engine.

Answering the question quoted. I have 30+ passes on the stock 400 block that is in the car now - same block we ran in '09 through this past Pontiac Heaven - this block has more than 10 sub 7.50 et runs in a 2800+ lbs car. Why wouldn't that have relevance to the question from uneasyrider? Not sure I follow.

The question from uneasyrider was could a factory block hold up to 900+ bhp. Is there more stress on the block from 900+ bhp naturally aspirated vs. 900+ bhp supercharged? Not sure I understand...where in post #21 does uneasyrider specify naturally aspirated over boosted? My apologies if I missed it.
