The valance sticker is from Lackland

The emblems on the rocker moldings are "428". You are correct in that the GTO did not have any call out emblems.

The virgin original 400 runs great but it was too pingy but i didnt want to open it so I dropped in a 69 428HO with 9.5 compression.

I kept the original rocker moldings and put the emblems on a repro set of moldings. The 428 emblems are NOS 68 fullsize if I remember right

North, is the Lackland AB sticker original or did you source one out? Either way too cool! My grandma had a 62 KGW sticker on her car. It's was an am radio station played top twenty of the 60 and 70's. I looked along time but finally found one. It will be going on the car when done.
Picture to follow tonight.

It's the original sticker, it is heavy gauge plastic and reflectorized, like the coating on a road sign. The expiration date is like a year sticker on a license plate.

It's actually bothering me now because the car is scheduled for painting this spring and I hate to lose it!

The back bumper (original chrome) has the dealer sticker (Superior Pontiac) and a parking sticker for Methodist hospital where his wife was a doctor.

I would NOT want to loose that AB sticker. Wonder how hard to reproduce. Non reflective sticker no problem but reflective might be a different story. Probably little harder sticker to find then my KGW sticker LOL.

Good thing about the reflective stickers are that they are pretty durable. If I wanted to save it, I'd investigate a way to possibly peel it off. Something that would soften the glue maybe.
My '68 VW has a Warner Robins AFB sticker in the windshield and an "Otto Glockler VW- Frankfurt/M" VW dealership badge was in the glovebox. Obviously, someone in the AF bought the car in Germany and liked it enough to bring it home with him/her when he rotated out.

I know the story for my LeMans as well;

The original owner (I believe she is still alive in her 90's but I haven't spoken to her in two years) received it from her late husband as a 25th wedding anniversary-Xmas gift in December 68. They kept it as a week-end touring car right up till the 90's when she couldn't really enjoy driving anymore. In 2005 she lost her license and no one in the family knew what to do with the car so they sold it on eBay.

My Firebird also has an interesting story;

I bought it from the second owner a few years ago. He had bought it from the original owner in 72. I was able to track down the original owner and speak to him;

The original owner was a student in upstate NY and in the summer of 69 (he wasn't too far from Woodstock ) and was about to start at UCSD (San Diego)so his dad offered to buy him a new car.

His dad wisely said no V8's to his son telling him it would be too much engine for a inexperienced driver. Being young in the horsepower era he proceeded to buy every car magazine to find what the most powerful 6 he could buy. 230 horse sounds low but compared to 120-150 horses for most other 6's 230 was big stuff.

They ordered the car and he picked it up literally the day he drove to San Diego. When he graduated in 72 he sold it and moved back to upstate New York.

btw, he told me he never liked the car, no AC, manual steering and brakes! but never had a stitch of trouble with it

Here is a picture of the sticker I was talking about. Might seem silly but I can listen to the "classic" rock today and have so many memories of driving around in my grandmas car, brings me right back. All though my Grandma was in her 50's-60's she still listened to the music my Mom and Dad were listening to, well at least on the radio.

Fast Signs can perfectly duplicate the AB sticker if you can give them
a high quality digital photo of it.

Default Cadmium plating

I had the parts that were originally cad plated redone with cad. These are the original backing plates, isolator brackets and caliper mounting brackets. Silver and gold cadmium. Basically any silver attached to the chassis is cad. I plated the zinc phosphate parts in my shop, like the steering knuckles, steering knuckle arms, upper control arm shafts as well as most nuts and bolts.

Default Stamps

These are some stampings on the chassis. The vin is stamped on top of the frame directally above the stampings in the first photo, did not post because, well its the vin. I have heard bad things about people stealing a cars ID.

Rear end housing.

Starter.

You might have noticed a lot of suspension parts not tightned down. I have heard you want the front end weight on it first. Any thoughts on this. I could put some bags of blasting media, 50 lbs ea.
I got my tranny all done and will get some pictures of that up soon, looks killer, had the shift rods done in gold cad!

GW, yessir, you want the weight of the motor/trans in the car before you tighten them down. I would just wait before you spend the time and effort of putting sandbags in....that would be alot of bag to match the weight of the motor/trans/body parts. Just wait till it's all back together.....it's not like your gonna drive it anywhere. lolz

Looking fantastic man!!!

What did you use so that you could do the zinc phosphate at your shop? Caswell?

You are doing a great job, thanks for all the pics

Greg, Nice job with the quarters. I'm surprised that you didn't weld in some original metal in the trunk with some of the other stuff you had. Was it easier to weld in the 3 pieces?

I sand blast all parts, then cook them in the zinc phosphate solution till they stop fizzing and soak them in WD-40. You can get the stuff from a number of places. I believe its the same a pakarizing, you can even make your own with steel wool and some other stuff but I chose to buy it. I will give you a more accurate description tomorrow when I get the reciepe out of my shop.

John, the 3 piece trunk worked out pretty well. I did have some other trunk pieces but Mike thought it was best to go with the new stuff, I believe he was correct.

Picture of supplies and cooking set up for zinc phosphate/parkerizing. 4oz/1gal water, bring to 180/190 degrees. Clean nuts and bolts in blast cabinet, use plyers not fingers to transfer to solution. Cook untill parts stop fizzing submerge in WD-40. I use an electric turkey cooker for bigger parts.

Here is a shot of one of the original 14" JK wheels I painted. I tried one of those mask kits you can buy and they SUCK!!! I sand blasted and primed. Sprayed the backside color, sprayed the silver then masked up the spokes by hand with blue tape and cut the rounded areas with an exacto knife. I then sprayed a coat of silver again so any paint that got behind the tape was silver. At this point no more paint will get behind the tape and I sprayed the charcoal.
I had all three paints matched to the spare and it is base clear, had to add flatner to the clear.
