James, I don't remember what if went for, but man what a beautiful car, I got a lot of close up pictures of that one.

I agree with previous statements that you should attend at least once in your life. It really is a spectacle to behold. Craig is a creep of the highest order, but I will admit that business-wise, he is pretty damn smart. Lots of nice cars, but the quality of some of them are suspect.

Russo and Steele is run by a guy named Drew Alcazar, who used to be Craig's right hand, while still a very shrewd business man, he is not quite the creep that Craig is (by the way Craig HATES him for starting a competing auction and they battle each other through City of Scottsdale politics). I will say that Russo and Steele is not as big, nor as much of a circus as BJ is, and I think that the cars at RS are much better quality.

Hey chief, I wan't talking about Steve Magnante, I was talking about the so called persident of the B-J auction his name is steve to , he'e the one on the stage in the auctioneer's box all the time & even when he's inside being on camara being interviewed hes always wearing those sunglasses. He doesn't have any eye problem but I do know the Steve M. does thats why he has become so good at knowing what a car is when blindfolded. But the little jerk thats always next the craig is the one I'm talking about , he's craigs yes man now. Thats why if you look everytime craig says somethign he's nodding his head like a spring headed dog in the back window of an old merc. Just watch the next time you see a rerun on tv, he'll be there just nodding away with his head half way up craigs ,,,,,,well you know where.

i attended this event twice in 09 as a VIP
it was cool and all, but i could only stay so long in the auction tent area
1- LOUD
2- It's a rich's mans hobby, not for poorpers like me
3- It's so TVized it's not funny

although i do think EVERY Shebly made car was at this event this weekend
it's either Shelby's or Corvettes
and who'd-u think Hendrick getting corevette #1

Steve Davis is the president of B-J. He does have a problem with bright lights and that is why he has to wear sun glasses indoors. The announcers explained all of this on Saturdays show. Just trying to clear up why he wears sun glaases in front of the camera's.

It was interesting that BJ announced during the Westworld show that there would NOT be an Orange County BJ auction this year.

Instead BJ will be in RENO, NV during the Hot August Nights events.

Must be an excellent back-story to that “No Orange County BJA”…

Did ya'll watch the auction from Reno? A '70 455 ragtop goat sold for over $100k. That's probably what, over 25 times it's original cost? But a black '65 3x2 ragtop goat only brought $42k.

That's still more cash than I have on hand, but seemed low as compared to the 70 model. I reckin I'm just not up on the auction scene. But it seems like it would be fun to be able to sit around and buy any car you happened to like when it comes thru. It seems rather odd that I was able to buy a brand new RA3 goat while earning only $1.50 per hour, but now, 40+ years later, I couldn't touch a clean example of that same car.

American musclecars were built so that most any young buck with a job could buy one. Now they are reserved for rich guys, with lots of play money.

Once again, the anouncer was totally missinformed. He spent almost the whole time talking about the Canadian built BOP 12 bolt rearend with bolt in axles that is in the car. Had no clue it's a Chevy 12 bolt. Also, 7" rallys, fender decal on the trunk & trunk decals on the fenders. Coolant sensor on engine not plugged into anything. Also had Judge eyebrow stripes when it went through, but not in the pictures. They also talked about how "Forest Green" was the replacement color for Verdoro Green in '70. WTF??? Nice car, but once again a B-J oversold car with this quote from the site "correct detail throughout".

There was something fishy going on with the bidding (wow, what a surprise!). The bidding stopped at $60K for the 70 GTO, then they (Jackson and Davis) stopped and told the crowd how it was "a $100K car all day". The auctioneer kept raising the gavel to end the bidding, then.... just as his gavel was coming down for the last time, Craig Jackson intercepts the auctioneers arm, within a fraction of a second of the car being sold, and suddenly another bid came in from nowhere. It happened again around $80K, then stopped once more at around $95K. Then they started to egg the crowd on to get it over $100K, and it eventually sold for $121K, about twice what this car was worth in today's market.

So....the car just about sold at $60K, the buyer was within one second of taking the car home, and eventually it sells for TWICE the amount?

I wouldn't be surprised if the car never sold. There's so much corruption and back door dealings going on at these auctions, you never know what you're seeing.

They had a segment on Jackson and Davis where they said they know what each car will bring before it gets up on the block, and they boasted that they're always right, to within a couple percentage points. It was a plea to sellers to "trust B-J's judgement on no reserve cars", which makes me all the more suspicious that the final bids for this 70 GTO were shill bidders to get the car from $60K to $121K.

BTW, I never did see who bought the car (I may have missed it). They always show the final bidder of a high-priced car signing the papers.

I actually do give these guys a break though. They have to talk about a wide range of cars, from imports to modern muscle, luxury to supercars, antiques to race cars, for hours and hours at a time. It must be hard to come up with interesting anecdotes and stories about every vehicle.

IIRC I happened to tune in at around the $60 to $80k mark and saw the jerking start-stop-start bidding presentation while this was on the block.

No way can I comment about this vehicle unless not only seeing this in person, but also driving it - even only in the staging lanes - to know what this car is really about. This comes from personal experience of driving auction cars that looked like mega $$$ and some were actual "Star Cars" that may look nice for camera, pictures, and some also in person; that were barely and/or undriveable. This same has been true in my experiences for many Pontiacs.

On the positive: I've found and driven many clean, tight, not photographic or televised vehicles that were downright nice and great value vehicles in person.

Keep in mind; most any vehicle you see televised, the owner has paid $$$ for it to be seen on the broadcast, and IIRC pay additional $$$ for coveted time slots on Auction Dates.

My wife also enjoyed it as Don Prudohomme was in the segment and we, like many fans over the years, met him when he was running his Dixon driven Miller Lite AA/TF dragster...and

Good post Alvin. I agree, most of these cars at auction are not as perfect as they appear to be on TV. I've been to the Mecum Auction in St. Charles IL several times, and many of the cars that appear to be flawless on TV do in fact have some issues.

The 70 GTO was very odd in that it had the eyebrow stripes and blacked out hood scoops, which were not in the photos on the web site. It's like they were in the process of making it a Judge, and like in "Invasion Of The Body Snatchers", we caught it in mid-transformation. Not quite a human being yet, but someone pulled it out of the pod.
