Does anyone know what the correct air filter decal is supposed to be for the 72 shaker and where to get one? This photo was from a recent posting from a survivor 72 T/A 455HO auto.

It has an "RT" code on it and possibly a 6486686 part number? (hard to see)

And an "RO" code from a 72 455HO Formula. Part #6486684

Of course, the allegedly correct decal that osborne sells (#DT378) has a "PQ" code and a part number of 6487735 and looks nothing like the original decal shown above.

From what I read here,

"Lower air cleaner assembly PN 6486669 is specific to '70 R/A-IV Trans Ams while PN 6486686 is specific to '71-72 Trans Am models. The '70 1/2 R/A-III Trans Am used PN 6486668, featuring a single snorkel but is otherwise identical in overall appearance to its dual-snorkel counterparts."

So, 6486686 seems to be the right part#, now does anyone have one of the correct decals?

Steve,

I had ECS Automotive replicate the original one from my 71 TA shaker base. It has the correct "RT" code on it. They should have them available even though it might not be in their catalog. I had them make my emission sticker with the correct code as well.

Note: They made it from a picture that I sent them since I didn't think I could get it off my air cleaner without destroying it. Plus, mine had a little paint overspray on it. They were able to do a pretty nice job with what I gave them.

Just got off the phone with ECS. Their part number is GAS-10, which is the generic, all-encompassing part number from their website. You have to call to actually place an order and then specify which application the decal is for, to get the correct one shipped. They had the "RT" coded decal in stock as well as a bunch of other two digit coded decals for other applications.

Got one ordered and on the way!

Not sure that this is original to my car but may answer were the air cleaner base and shaker originated from as the shaker has the 455 H.O. Decal but that may also not be original. The engine currently is a 73 455 that belonged to a manual car which is complete and matching from carb to pan.

I assumed the shaker base may have come from the original SD 455 when it was pulled out. Maybe the air cleaner base and shaker have 455 H.O. origins.

Can anyone explain what the PQ decal belonged to. I totally missed it up until now when I had the parts out again.

I have added this to this thread as it seems like it may be the right place for now.

Well, the PQ 6487735 belonged to the 1973 Trans Am/Formula SD 455 air cleaner (They also list it for the LS2 in the A-body. Did they make these?). But, your Q looks different than what should have been used. I wonder if it's a repro.

Do you have a picture of the underside of the air cleaner, Michael?

Got a fresh Picture this morning.

The car has been off the road since 1987, I don't know if people were reproducing things back than and the owner that had the car from 1982-1987 knew this car as it is today so I don't believe anything was changed on the car after 1981 when the car was brought to the country.

The only thing he was aware of changing were brake parts so I will need to investigate that area further down the track.

Their was another sticker on the passenger side guard which was Engine Oil Recommendations part no. 734791 . And a coolant sticker on the radiator support part no. 337450.

I don't know when the repro decal became available. But, Jim Osborn Reproduction has been making them for quite a while now.

DT0378 is the air cleaner decal - PQ 6487735
DT0057 is the cooling decal - 337450 and
DT0629 is the 1968-9 Canada oil change decal - 734791

The air cleaner itself look like an original '73 unit. If you want, you can run a piece of string between the edge of the snorkel to the edge of the oil breather square and post the measurement in inches, I'll let you know if it's a TA air cleaner or a Formula unit (but it's probably a TA unit).

The problem with the Osborn emission/air filter decals is that they are inaccurate when it comes to size, font, and color. Other than that they are perfect.

If you're referring to the PQ 6487735 decal, it was used on all 1973 Trans Am air cleaner bases (shaker) and the '73 Formula SD 455 vehicles. I don't think they produced any production '73 A-body LS2's that would have used this base.

And, Steve, all Osborn decals have imperfections. If you have an original and the repro. you'll be able to see all differences and pick it out immediately.

I was hoping to establish weather this air cleaner base and shaker belonged to the sd 455 or the wt block 455. Hard to know what was left behind and what wasn't when that motor was swapped out.
