Default I've Finally Had IT...Turbos too Heavy! NEW LightWeight TURBO!

Well, I havent actually started a post but the ball has been rollin slowly the last couple months. Been working with Calvin Hill from Hill Performance on putting together a stout 428ci short block with custom boost Diamond pistons and a few other goodies...

I've been draining Mark from Luhn Performance of more knowledge than i know what to do with...lol Were working on a custom boost related product that more than likley will get produced for the public. !! THANK YOU MARK !! Luhn Performance is the BEST , Mark is a great guy!!

I almost have collected all the things i will need to convert to boost and install the turbo. Fuel sys., Carb., exhaust piping, intercooler + piping, BOV, wastegate, ect.......

I will be doing a front passenger side mounted turbo similar to chris petersens build on PY . I'll be using a Borg Warner S475 , A/A intercooled with a Blow-thru CSU.
I purchased the turbo, flange, some piping and mount NEW but never used from a PZ member who backed out on his build. He was doing a install on a 78 or 79 TA.

So after playing around with the mount i found the turbo will not clear my hood , So im going to customize the existing or fab up a new bracket to tuck the turbo tighter. And i tell you what ..... ITS not the easiest to get that 60lbs turbo rigged up into position to find a better positioning.

So I designed a Lightweight turbo to assit with the mock up ...lol

My 409ss 2.25 just came in .... so once i get this bracket cut i can start in on the Hot side.

Great to see another Turbo coming together! I remember trying to do the same thing out of the styrofoam building insulation early on. Never finished, just took off the hot side and bolted that up to the mount bracket when getting a position for mounting.

Post up plenty of pics!

Mine only weighed 43. I used a cherry picker to hang it while I fabricated brackets.

Mike, I thought about the cherry picker but then i wanted to verify hood clearence. My first bracket was too tall and the turbo was touching down on the formula hood support beam and Im a little Worried about cooking the glass i guess..LOL

Not sure how wide of rubber you run on the front. I do run 255 front tire and trying to make sure i have room for a 275 if i ever wanted to later.

I was wondering about if you angled the turbo away from the radiator or does your bracket come off parallel to the frame? The air inlet sure is close to the radiator....

Im debating moving the radiator over one inch.

Were shooting for 700-800 HP Range. Trying to get my NON-Drag setup 72 Bird into the mid to low 10's

Working with Calvin Hill @ Hill Performance & Mark @ Luhn Performance we are pretty confident to hit our goal.

I would like to see some pictures of your Bird with the twins......too Cool !!

Cool. 800hp should be easy mid tens.

My build has a long way to go. Waiting to see how the new DCI RA5 heads turns out. To me, they seem to be the hottest deal out there for a boosted Pontiac. Shooting for 1500hp on E85. Its for my street car.

I had originally planned on using a pair of BW turbos but at 50lbs + each I couldn't justify adding all that weight to the front end. Not to mention the shipping costs from the States to here. I ended up with a pair of MasterPower T70's, about 20lbs each, the Precision 78's were about the same weight as the MP'S but with more power potential, although twice the cost.

I did the same thing...created a styrofoam GT-4788. I posted a pic of it in Mark's thread on his 63 Catalina build joking around. But seriously, at less than a pound it was awesome to work with and close enough in size to get to the last 1/2" in clearance around it. That GT-4788 weighs a ton, and there was no way to hold it while figuring out the 4 pipes going into and coming out of it, measuring to make the bracket, etc. Of course my turbo is mounted in the firewall unlike so many other people.

What do you want to bet someone is gonna want to borrow your foam turbo? Someone here already wants mine...

Oh, and glad to see you doing the turbo. Boosted Pontiacs are fun! I think my 67 Grand Prix convertible is going to get one someday too, a simpler setup than my trans am, but should still surprise those who dont know. lol

Have you done your headers yet? I have pics of my forward facing turbo headers from Ron in my thread.

Default Progress

Well i have been making good progress with the little time i can get to the garage. Been tackling a few projects at once.

The turbo is mounted and mounting bracket finished. (probably 20 times of tack welding and checking for clearence.)

Downpipe is basically figured out , 5" OD for 24" long then taper down to 4" to fit between the firewall.

Merge flange is welded up / trimmed and clearenced.

Im currently working on the hot side ( will be insalling a vbands for maintnence and Two flex joints on each pipe to allow slight engine movement)

The wastegate will be mounted on top of the merge flange (similar to chris petersen and 70bird) I scored a used Turbosmart Progate 48mm for a killer deal. Its a little tall but it will fit.

I have also started a radiator relocation. Im going to move the radiator over to the drivers side 1" , bumped next to the frame rail. My reasoning is Im making more room for a airfilter or custom air box if i decide that route & that i already own 3 GM fourcore radiators so it did not make sence for me to purchase a narrower one.

I have taken quite a few pictures but havent pulled them from the camera yet.

Heres a few cheap phone picts

Looking good. My down pipe fit between the chassis and block, used a90 bend on top and 45* at bottom split into 4's. No clearance issues at all.

Default Progress

I make a little progress today -

)I trimmed the pass. side core support for the airfilter and intercooler piping.
)Started a mock up of the intercooler.

(Not sure if im keeping this Precision Turbo 750hp universial intercooler it has 2.75 in/out)

Question - How much space should i leave between the intercooler and radiator?
