Just a made in the USA part,oh that's right I forgot every American is lazy,or wants too much money to make the part,I don't understand GM if they had all the original dies and tooling, they should have made all the reproductions, they would have made a killing, maybe I am missing something

how about this, since they repro the rear tail panel and the inner lower tail, lets see someone make the little panel that connect the trunk drop off with the inner lower tail panel. Mine were tore up so bad i had to make them, it sucked.

I think GM never understood the parts business. They seemed eager to pull parts support as soon as possible - 10 years was standard. On some parts, the price was often stupidly high. Some NOS parts today aren't even bringing what GM was charging for them back in the 80's.

On the tripower equipped '64 - '67 GTOs (probably several other apps as well) there's a vacuum check valve at the front carb which is needed if the original vacuum operated secondaries are used. I know most guys just go to mechanical secondaries, but it would be nice to be able to get the parts to bring it back to original design. The check valve would be as easy to make as the one for the brake booster, so it should be relatively inexpensive.

Default the 1972 Thermostatic purge valve #3026085

http://www.ebay.com/itm/NOS-1972-Pon...699e0e&vxp=mtr

This emissions control valve came on every 1972 Pontiac V-8, regardless of performance level. You are already making the 1971 version so you have all the metal parts done. Just make the top that fits it for 1972 and we won't have see crazy prices like the one in this ebay ad any more.

I have an original (cracked) one you could borrow.

1971 gto front grill pot metal chrome surrounds would be awesome, because the re chroming process would likely ruin an original, I think they would sell, and go over very well if reproduced nicely.

Tooling wears out. In restoring this Trans Am I noted that the control arms had very rough edges, indicative of worn stamping dies. GM junked the tooling pretty much as soon as the 81 left the line.

There seems to be a lot of interest so I'll try to get everyone up to speed on sheet metal. I worked at GM in body stamping for decades in the tool and die dept. GM kept old dies that had product demand, from dealers. The dealers would order parts and when they had a big enough order to make a run they would, usually in the summer. These were flame hardened tools on the working surfaces so they lasted indefinitely. I ran 69 GTO convert quarters in 1989. 68-69-70 Firebird quarters too. By the way, the Camaro and Firebird convert quarters were made with the heaviest guage metal ever used in a body die, bar none. Those run in the later years all have zinc coating on both sides and are rust proof.
Any part can be rerun today. Original tools are gone. They are either in the hands of a licenced after market supplier that can meet same quality or they have been scrapped. In that case, semi hard tools, kirksite, can be cast and finished to the original tools. It's a bit costly but not impossible. You need enough demand to ammortize the cost affordably. Many parts are made this way. With CAD it's getting cheaper all the time. Scan a fender and cut the same day. Hand finish and stamp. It's all about demand.

Default Heater Core that can be installed from a service standpoint

I have a 1969 Firebird, but this probably applies to many makes. Heater cores were installed at the factory seconds before the blower motor case (and well before the installation of the fender). There was plenty of room to pass the pre-bent tubes (inlet and outlet) of the heater core thru the firewall. But as a service part, this is a nightmare. The blower motor housing covers up a potion of the holes in the firewall that the tubes pass thru making it (in my case) impossible to install a new heater core. This is the rare time when it really does not make sense to make the reproduction exactly the same as the original. I understand the reason the tubes have a bend, but maybe it doesn't have to have the full bend or maybe there is some other solution that involves a heater core with straight tubes and then some type of attachment of other tubes on the firewall side. Right now I'm forced to run a bypass until I figure something out ....really don't want to butcher my firewall or take the hood and fender off.

mgoblue, you might try carefully unbolting & dropping the inner fender, realize the front bolts can be stubborn. I always spray them down with Kroil or PB blaster before taking on such a task.

Thanks 'ol Pinion Head, I may give that a try. Are you suggesting that by dropping the inner fender I can get more access to remove the blower motor case (or at least pull it back a couple inches from the firewall). If I can get the blower motor case off, then installing the heater core becomes much easier. Right now, there are two speed nuts under the fender that I cannot get to.
