Sounds like fun Mark. fwiw my 90 bird minus engine and trans only cost me $300. No rot very little rust anywhere a few dings and needs a new nose piece and paint... Perfect for what I have in mind. Was a base v6 car.
Heres from where I found it. Once washed it looked a bunch better... Was thinkin just repaint same color as its actually pretty nice... however Daughter has a medium cadet blue mazda and the color is growin on me... NO birds I ever saw in the shade of blue the mazda has so it would help it stand out from the rest. Just more work to do it right. Car is getting a 12 point cage and at minimum mini tubbed... thinkin minimum of a 325/50-15 and considering M+H drag radial 390/45-15 or similar size Hoosier or M/T. Plan to keep outboard edge of tire about where stock sits maybe up to 1" max further out... these cars just look dumb with a tire too far outboard or inboard for that matter. Surprisingly...my '60 9.3 Pontiac/Olds rear measures approx 2" narrower wheel flange to wheel flange than the stock Firebird 7.5" rear. Probably run a spool but might modify to fit a Ford 9" centersection instead, leavin the option to run locker or spool. If you stumble on a 91-92 nose section I want it! However a decent 86-90 base model nose isnt all that bad. Been too busy on the 270 hemi 34 plymouth coupe old school hot rod to do much on my own car... but it pays for my parts and I'm really likin this thing. Coupe body is on 32 ford frame we boxed, wears a 32 ford grill, is highboy style with hair pin front and stock wishbone rear... has a quick change under it... I adapted a 64 torqueflite to the hemi and were usin push button shift... upgraded trans for modern convertor and finally made use of a 3000 stall convertor I pulled in 1991... I doubt the little hemi stalls much past 2200 but it will be better than tryin to run a 13" big car convertor for sure... Will have 17" truck spoked wheels out back and matching 16's up front... I have been custom wiring all this past week... what a time eater... gauges and battery kill switch tomorrow and that completes the electrics... all wiring came from leftovers from other wiring kits and spare hardware in the shop... Why???...because David said in the old days we made do with what we had before considerin buyin something... the whole project has been this way... We started late last fall... and have 3 other projects we are doing at same time... I'll get some pics when we take it to a friday nite cruise... which just might happen by months end... I'm motivated...Then my car will have a space in the shop! |

Years ago I had thought up a plan to build a slant 4 Pontiac using a V8 block. Jack will end being the first to do it though and that is OK by me. A DOHC hemi Pontiac! wow!

Jack I saw that you were doing that. WOW, I'm in love with it. More power to you sir. Was it your intention to build it on the drivers side bank? Or is that just for the head mock up?? That is just outstanding. I would love to build mine with a RA V head. Maybe by the time I get to a head selection, I can swing one head. Of course my 1/2wenzler intake would be out the window but a custom single sided tunnel port intake would not be that hard to fab up.
I went and cut the manifold in half this morning. These are the mock up pics. ![]() ![]() ![]() Just have to make up my mind what I'm going to do for induction and close up the plenum to match. Mark L

AGREE.
Use two of the Holley 4412 Holley 2 BBL carbs (same shaft centerline) with the blades centered over the individual runners. Use a dual quad TR linkage so that the "pull" is at the factory location/height for proper carb function 9without shaft bending that a Mechanical Weber carb set-up typically has. Use 30 cc (or plugged and drilled smaller) shooters on each carb. Idle system for the carbs can be taylored for the 2 cylinder "Draw" vs the stock V8 4 cylinder per revolution "Draw". Power Valve tuning will be like a typical 4 cylinder circle track calibration except with a smaller Power Valve Channel Restriction strategy. Tom Vaught

I plan to boost this motor and I really want to go to EFI and boos t (either turbo or supercharger). So I will probably make plates to close off the plenum and add mounting bosses for some kind of twin throttle bodies mounted vertically out the side. This would allow for great hood clearance. I was thinking two stock '90-'93 Ford Mustang type bodies should be enough for what I need. But who knows what may come up. I could build it out and make the opening face forward with a taper to the rear of the plenum and use one big throttle body. Right now I can do anything. First I need to add injector bungs. There's enough room under the runners that I could even add another set of injectors under the manifold and run 8 small instead of 4 large injectors. As long as the EFI system can drive 8 injectors correctly. Not real up on how capable the systems are but I think it is doable.

Mark, Ford trucks/full size Bronco that era use a two barrel throttle body with a feed hose from air cleaner to each barrel. You might want to explore that.

Bruce, you're right, forgot about them. I bought a new '89 Ford F250 with the EFI 460. I think that was the first year for the EFI on the 460. It ran great and worked flawlessly. Do you know if the throttle bodies are different sizes, and what the sizes may be if different, between the truck 302,351, and the 460 engines? The twin barrels could be positioned right over the Siamesed ports on the plenum. I would need two sets. Time to look at E-Bay and Craigslist. Thanks for the tip Bruce. You're good for my project engineering, although my wife would probably argue that point, LOL. Mark L.

Should be plenty in the salvage yards Mark... I would think the 460 TB's would be bigger than a 302... but with Fords you never know...
Not really sure but two of the 302 TB's should be plenty big enough. Most every time I had the hood up on my 90 Bronco (5.0) I thought how easy it would be to plumb a pair of turbos. I miss that truck. Had the full trailer tow package(plus Eddie Bauer pkg) and being short wheelbase and wide it sure made trailering anything easy. Especially backing thru tight places. Go ahead tell your wife I'm making you do this... I dont think she'll believe you, but I'll take the heat if she does. |

Mark- my use of the "other half" is due to circumstances- this particular Harvey Aluminum block is "junk" because of major cracks running almost full length of the passenger side of it. The cracks have been completely TIG'd now, but using it as a V8 block (with cam in normal position) would be next to impossible. So...

OK, I think I remember you talking about that now. Do you have a resting place for it in mind or is this a project/engineering exorcise? I don't see where it would present any different problems/opportunities than if you were building it on the passenger side. BUT. I think you could sell the finished product to a Brit or an Aussie. LOL. They might appreciate the switch.

It will go into my lakester, putting it into F-BFL class (3 liter, blown-fuel lakester).
I've got an extension for Hilborn pump mounting- 5" I think, need to look. Although I'm not planning to use it again, I'm not fond of parting with it. Unless... someone wanted to trade me something I'm searching for. Got any antique-style trumpet-shaped exhaust pipes?

3 litres? so you are destroking from 195 size? Are you using 370 arm size? 90 degree or 180 degree crank ( if I may ask )?

Stroke will be a little shy of 3.75". I won't know the stroke exactly until the bores are done- I'll re-use the sleel sleeves, but don't know just where they'll clean up (between existing 3.965" and about 4"). Crank will be a custom billet anyway, so I'm free to choose a stroke. I'll set displacement about 3-4 c.i. shy of 3 liters. Crank will be flat (end throws 180` from center two).

Jack,
Thanks for the info. I think you should have your own thread on your build. Or perhaps, we 2 should start a M/T HEMI thread since we are the only ones with complete running engines. Others with parts and later owners with pieces that show up can add too. Not sure if you know or go there but, I did start a M/T HEMI thread on the hamb board. It is a very large forums on all kinds of hot rodding. Here is a link http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/s...d.php?t=316668 Your thoughts? Would you be interested in posting over there? Both you and I are planning to each have 2 running M/T HEMIs.

Thank you for the offer Jack, if you prefer to keep parts I completely understand, I will find one or buy new so it is not a problem. If it was something that was needed and I was not able to find it, then I'd camp on your doorstep, LOL. I'm pretty sure I don't have anything old of value to trade.
I would love to have one of those Hemi heads for my 4 cylinder. That would change the whole build from different and neat to "off the hook". If I can swing the cost I'm thinking of a repo RA V head for it. I'm sure I could score a used single aluminum head like a nice Edelbrock or a KRE for it and for a decent price. But a RA V would be fanatastic. I'd definitely do a blower of some sort to help with the power down low with those big ports on the little motor. Even making my own intakes would not be as hard since you don't have to mirror the opposite side. But that is what dreaming is for. Helps you get your Ducks in a row. Mark L MArk L

After cutting the T Ram in half I bolted it back on to see the actual damage the badly cut flanges did to the alignment of the halves. This is pretty telling.

My Victor lines up fine. I thought it might be funny that someone had polished this turd but it had never been run. The price was "OK" so I always suspected something. But did not have anything to really try it on until the finished motor got home. But, it got me thinking and moving on the 4 cylinder and that's OK too. Just money right??? I just wanted to make sure no one else was taken with it.
