What an amazing guy!

The exhaust tip story he is referring to is the fact that when the car was delivered it showed up with the tips looking cross-eyed, pointed heavily toward the center of the car and not straight out the back. He adjusted them so they point straight back (and incidentally rub the inner quarter on the passenger side.)

And the paint flaw consists of a weird couple of pieces of fuzz and hair in a line on the passenger side fender where the assembly line painter must have dragged the air line across the car when it was being painted.

I would look for the build sheet in that car. Chances are, No one has had anything apart on that car. It could be sitting right under the seat.

No one has to question him on what he ordered, we have PHS for that. The build sheet is more documentation on how it was assembled. Would have been nice to match the paper stickers with documentation.

When Rick emailed me this evening, I was at a local cruise night this evening with another original paint 73 SD that is owned by a friend of mine here in town.

While changing the oil, I used the now oily camera to shoot some random detail shots:

The rear drum with the original copper Tinnerman clips still intact, holding the drum in place:



Drivers side front rotor. I had no idea the original wear groove was supposed to be that deep!

All standard original items from the line. Did the front springs, fuel, proportional brake valve still sport their decals, and what about the lower black spoiler off the radiator support???
My 13k mile brew had them along with the timing decal still with the car. All cool items along with the paint dabs from testing systems on the line.
Notice the yellow wax crayon on the fan shroud. Does it state the mfg date? its not quit legible from the pictures.

Black plastic spoiler is there. The crayon says "AF -20", presumably antifreeze testing result. It does need a heater core since the core is bypassed wth the waterpump hise going directly to the head.

BTW, I googled "Suburban Pontiac, Glen Head, NY" and look what popped up - the HP article on the other 73 SD Formula sold new at the dealership. It's a blue/white 4-speed. Rocky Rotella wrote the article.

That is one awesome documented unmolested original car. More correct and original than the white/tan TA barn find that came up 4 or 5 years ago in CA.

No spoiler, no handling package and no Formula wheel. Adding the Formula wheel was a good choice. Gives both of these cars the extra HP to keep up with the HO cars. This white SD is amazing. Very happy Steve found this car and was able to bring it home. What a great garage picture. Congrats! Was excited to show my wife pictures of your car.......response...wow, it is super cool, there's no bird?

I'm not questioning the car at all. I looked at this car in person about 1 year ago and it was beautiful, as original as they get. It's just always a real treasure to find the build sheet as it went down the line 40 years ago

Enrico hasn't missed a single beat in 40 years of recall .

If you ever get around to REALLY nailing this car - i would install a Rev Limiter first.
They will peg the tachometer if the tranny lets loose while the hammer is being held down. Mine would turn loose about 5200-5300 and the o.o. neglected to tell me about it.

If you start power tuning and checking secondary throttle response in the driveway etc ... before the oil is up to operating temperature - they will blow the oil filter loose.

If you try to run 10/w40 oil because its summer time - and revv too stiff before oil is full operating temperature - they will blow the oil filter loose.

The valve cover decal may be wrong about the rod bolts/nuts -
but the oil recommendation is gospel .

Just sharing some SD lessons i learned ... the uncomfortable way.

Rick called this morning with more info. He said he ordered it with an automatic because that is what he wanted. He was not going to be drag racing it and didn't want the constant clutch work around the New York suburbs that the 4-speed would have entailed. He said there were no order prohibitions about A/C not being available with a stick, at the time he ordered the car.

When the car was due to come in he told the dealer that under no circumstances was ANYONE at the dealership allowed to "test drive" the car prior to delivery. Of course when it came in, the service guys ignored the mandate and drove it around town. Rick found out about it and tore them a new one. He said he was "this close" to telling them to "stick the car where the sun don't shine" when he found out that they violated his directive. But at the last minute decided to go ahead with the purchase.

Rick drove the car from NY to Arizona in July of 1975 where he started a chain of chassis dynamometer tuning centers. His vanity plate for the SD was "TUNE-UP". He still has his original vanity plate and is sending it along with the steering wheel. He is still looking for the second file he has on the car that will have photos, etc., in it.

When he sold the car in 1986 it had 13,000 miles on it. When the second owner sold it, it had 17,080 miles (as written on the windshield inspection sticker from 1992).
