Default 66 GP am/fm radio

Is there a difference between the '65 and '66 am/fm radios besides the knobs?

Thanks for your help ... any pics would be awesome

They are slightly different. One has straight side and the other has a bulge in one of the sides. They will work either way, but you will not be able to use the support on the side if you do not use the correct year. I have had a '66 radio in my '65 for years and you can not tell from the dash.

Thanks for the info Steve ... my car has an AM only radio ... if I get the correct '66 radio will it fit right in? Does the '66 have the straight side or the bulge?

Does anyone have a pic of a '66 radio?

Thanks

Anything you need to know about 66 radios I'm the guy... The first picture is a 66' B body, the second picture is the A and B body without the bezel. As you can see the only difference with the bezels removed is the A has black plastic push buttons where the B body has metal push buttons. The AM/FM have the same footprint as the AM, if you need a picture of a FM I have those also, it really doesn't matter.

.02 you are way ahead if you spend the $ to have your AM converted at turnswitch.com than spending $300 on a non working AM/FM and then the same again to have it restored. I have bought a number of the '66 AM/FMs, and I would not do it again.

I've got a '66 AM/FM - don't know if it works or not. PM me if you're interested - I'm not asking $300 for it

Doesn't the '65 chrome bar with "PONTIAC" on it differ from '66s? As in, the dash bezel lacks the divider bar between the radio's dial face and the "PONTIAC" deal?

Nope. They are the same. I have put both in my cars. No difference in hole for AM or AM/FM. I have had all permutations of these in my cars. Have also never encountered the issues of mounting a '65 or '66 radio as ref'd by Steve P. Always the same contortionist activity with everything lining up in the end.

I think that the '66 radio has the bulge in the side.

So what's the deal with the face interchange? Someone said you can take a later am/fm and just switch the face on them to make it all work out? Anyone done this or can it be done?

I don't see how this could work with the AM/FM slide and the slots in the dash. Plus, they have black plastic buttons.

The face plate swap is for A body/B body AFAIK.

Some of the 67-70(?) radios had silver buttons.

Thanks joeg. I've suspected that the A- and B-body shared the same radio, and that only the faceplate is different.

Does anyone knows if the $595 Retro-Radio that you can find almost anywhere has a detachable faceplate?
If so you would be able to have a modern radio in your 1965-66 B-body without any major modifications.
If not, why the h_ll do they build a radio that misses a lot of customers?
