I purchased the PHS documents on the Red Car about 3 years ago and did not receive this information. Thanks for tempering my enthusiasm though.

BWB..after I hit submit on my previous post I thought my posts' tone would be taken contrary to how I meant it to be. Apologize if it came across nasty, wasn't meant to be. PHS.... if they fax you the sheet, you just get your invoice, if they mail you the PHS documents,you get the invoice,a glossy black and white "press" photo of the TA, plus a half inch thick stapled AMA specs. Please don't take my comments as anything but trying to keep you from scanning all the pages in and posting on this thread. Was just trying to save you some legwork(you mentioned something about scanning at your office?) anyway, if an apology is in order, then consider this one..

I'll look at the packet I got on the Lemans Sport just to verify, but I remember being a little underwhelmed at the time and don't recall the AMA booklet. However, I am becoming convinced my mind is going...

I think it may depend on when you got it also. I got mine years ago, and it was pretty thin. a picture, the PHS sheet, and one explaining some of the options and that was it.

Exactly, I have PHS on all my vehicles and never got an AMA set, some I got a b&w pic.

What gear ratio would a 71 4sp with AC have? I should know this but I can't remember.

I am thinking close ratio 3:42:1 an automatic would be the same, except adding a/c it gets a 3:08:1 I know that should be correct for 1972..I believe 1971 offered both close and wide so it will be interesting if there are more ratios

I know the standard rear ratio was 3.42:1 auto or stick. Adding AC to an automatic got you 3.08:1 gearing. I had the thought that AC in a stick got you 3.23:1. I don't know where I got that.

3.31:1 is correct ratio for 455 H.O./4-Speed M22/AC. Edit: For the GTO. Not sure about T/A

3.42 was the correct ratio in '71 for 455 HO bird with manual trans & AC. No 3.23 gears till later in the 70's.
In '72, whether one ordered a/c, or not, the '72 HO M22 Birds came with 3.42's.

in 1971 did you get a choice of close or wide ratio shifter?..and if so the axle ratio was only one, for the both?

ALL 71 & 72 T/A's came with 455 HO's as standard equipment.....all manual trans T/A's came with M22's....there were NO options....TH400 or M22...

Close or wide ratio refers to the transmission. The ratio part referred to the percentage drop of rpm between gears. The m22 is a close ratio tranny. It is the same gearing as the m21. The m20 was the wide ratio. I think The wide ratio would have suited the torque of a Pontiac better. The m22 was a stronger tranny because of the straiter cut gears. It made more noise however. Therefor the nickname rock crusher.

could I have read a sales brochure that offered close or wide ratio, but in reality only one being close was offered?..actually I just read in a 1971 brochure...Transmission fully synchronized 3 speed muncie

Just got a 71 ta that someone put a doug nash 5 sp in it. They are supposed to have the "straight" cut gears as well. Can't wait to hear it once its road worthy.
