The car pictured has a 71 grill, but the T/A was only available in 70. Funny how the text above the photo says the same, but they caption the photo a '71 T/A
1971. In 1971, designers made subtle styling changes to the Dodge Challenger, providing new treatments to the taillamps and grille. The single-taillamp design from 1970 became two distinct lights for 1971, and a new-for-1971 twin-inlet Challenger grille was painted silver on standard models and black on R/Ts. Challenger R/T models also received a set of fiberglass quarter-panel louvers. An additional coupe model with fixed quarter windows was added to the lineup. As in 1970, a wide range of trim levels, exterior colors and striping options made the Dodge Challenger easy for customers to create a special car. However, for 1971, Dodge dropped the T/A (it was no longer racing in Trans-Am), SE models and R/T convertible. New EPA emission standards led to some powertrain changes; the optional 375 horsepower 440-cubic-inch was eliminated, as was the Six Pack-equipped 340-cubic-inch powerplant. The 383-cubic-inch Magnum engine was detuned to 300 horsepower by lowering the compression ratio for improved emissions. However, a 390 horsepower six-pack 440 V-8 was available, and the 425 horsepower 426-cubic-inch HEMI still topped the vast engine offerings. A Dodge Challenger paced the Indianapolis 500 race in 1971. Dodge produced 50 Challenger convertible pace car replicas — all painted HEMI Orange with white tops and interiors. ![]() 1971 Dodge Challenger TA. |

Isn't Skips drive in in Schaumburg??? If so is it still open & do they still cruise there. We use to drive the 2 1/2 hours to go there from MI. just to see all the great cars there. We use to come as a group of about 10 cars from Niles MI. back in the 80's

Skip's was in Melrose Park, and it closed way back in the early 1970's. Other hangouts in the suburbs of Chicago were Flukie's and Duke's Drive-In.

Yes I was mistaken it was Dukes. If I remember correct there was a Pontiac dealer close & a caddy dealer to. Both were close just down the street a bit. Lots of cars & almost no room to park if you didn't get there real early.

Duke's Drive-In in pretty far south, way down in Oak Lawn. We used to frequent that place every Friday or Saturday night from the late 1970's up through to the mid-1990's. They used to have a small lot which went around the building (horseshoe shape lot), then the gas station next door folded, and Duke's bought out their lot, effectively doubling their parking, and they added a canopy with overhead lights for some select parking up by the building.
Unfortunately, the later 1990's brought in the import crowd, and Duke's began to die a slow death. By the 2000's, their lot was 1/4 full on a Friday or Saturday night. It didn't help when prices on classic muscle cars began to climb, and owners of classic GTO's and Chevelles decided to keep their investments in their garages, only bringing them out for the occasional car show. Duke's fell off the map for cruise nights. The drive-in's were replaced by dozens and dozens of suburban downtown cruise nights. Suburban mayors soon realized there was a ton of money to be made hosting a cruise, as this brought out shoppers, ice cream eaters, and store browsing. The suburban cruise night was more family oriented. Still some great gatherings around here, mostly fueled by club organization or through social networks, and you see a main theme (or brand of car) heavily represented every week. We have cruises 7 nights a week around here (and multiples on some nights, all within 30 minutes driving distance), and some of these pull 300-400 cars each.
