What exactly dos NASA or NACA hood stand for or mean ?
What years was it optional ? My daughter and I passed on this '75 Lemans last year with a NASA/NACA hood as a winter beater.

455 , the term NASA is the term for the style of the hood on the 73 GTO. The term NACA is for the style of the Duct on the 73 GTO hood. The NACA Duct was/is a style of the Duct the US NAVY used on some of the fighter jet in the 40's. That style of DUCT has been used on several cars over the years. Pontiac used the hood on the 73-76 GTO/LeMans bodies as an option & as the hood for the 73 GTO. As has been stated before the hood was & always called by the term NASA in all their printed material. Over the years there has been an on going argument about the 2 terms. As some continue to call it by the term for the DUCT & not the hood itself. Pontiac called the hood the NASA hood (like the space agency) in an effort to capitalize on the space race that was going on in the 70's. Pontiac thought it would help in sales of the car . But there are some that insist on calling it but the DUCT term only. Most will know what your talking about when you say either one but the correct term is the NASA hood. There is also 2 styles of the NASA hood . The first style has the vents in the back of the hood which goes across both side of the hood & then the 2nd style of hood is just a flat style hood with the NACA Ducts & no vent stamped in the back of the hood. The 1st style is for the 73-74 cars & the 2nd style is for the 75-76 cars. But there may be some cross over hoods , or replacement hoods installed on the 1st. style cars. The replacement hoods didn't get the vents stamped in the back of the hoods. I hope this helps in your quest to be a real 73-77 Pontiac A-Body guy.

![]() Would have bought the Lemans pictured above, but I thought $4,000 was a bit much for the condition it was in.

Guy in high schools mother had a very nice dark maroon 455 4 door with many options; they sold it around '88 or '89 I wish I would have begged my dad for a loan to get it - it went for cheap (around $1,000)

As everyone knows, 'Like A Rock' became the ad slogan for Chevy trucks but the video has a variety of cool cars in it, including a 75 Firebird.

A D37 GTO Coupe is based off a LeMans 2 door coupe. It has the large triangular glass quarter windows, and a mandatory bench seat. Bucket seats were NOT available in the coupe. The VIN will begin with 2D37.
A F37 GTO Sport Coupe is based off a LeMans Sport Coupe. It could have either the louvered quarter windows, or a rare factory option was the large triangular glass quarter windows. This was available late in the model year. A bench with fold down armrest, or bucket seats were available in this bodystyle. The glovebox door will have a woodgrain applique. The VIN will begin with 2F37.

Per a Hi-Performance CARS Magazine road test in 1973, a 455 GTO ran the quarter mile in 14.7 sec at 91 mph.

The 4.10's, while improving the ET over the 3.08's were probably too much for the low CR 455. It would have been interesting if the car had 3.42's like the test car that Cars magazine tested, and was able to get a 14.7 bone stock.
