The subject of 69 exhaust extensions came up in another thread and it got me thinking about them. There seems to be a concensus here that 69 exhaust tips (a concensus I was part of) were GTOmanual trans only owing to them being 2.25" and all A body tailpipes with the exception of manual trans goats (regardless of engine) had 2" tailpipes.
This seemed strange because all the factory literature such as the order books shows no such restriction. So I looked it up in a 1970 MPC and low and behold two different part numbers (verbatim from MPC): 69 G.T.O. - M. T. 9797245 $8.84 EXTENSION, pipe 2 (quantity) 69 T/6 - T/8 exc S.W. or G.T.O. M.T. 9797013 $8.84 EXTENSION, pipe AR (quantity as required) Looks like no one repros this part, wonder why? You'd think they'd sell piles of them.

MPC's have been wrong before. I have never seen an auto equipped 69 with factory tips...

They were available. They aren't reproed because the vendors figure 99 per cent of people are going to go with the larger tailpipes on their cars anyway.
I've had the larger than stock pipes on my car for 40 years. |

I just looked at my 69 PHS collection, 20 cars had them (out of 600+ cars), surprisingly the majority were automatics (14 of 20).
You would think that with someone would reproduce the two inch version by now.

So they go on the outlets of the resonators?

That is correct, they attached to the back of the resonators.

John,
I have been "fixing" some mistakes on the 69 Lemans including installing the exhaust extensions correctly. Also the driver side exhaust appears to be correct factory bend (car was originally single exhaust exit) but both sides have 2 1/4" tailpipes! Obviously someone wanted to put the repo extensions on. Written on the tailpipe for the driver side in black marker was the second owners last name. He installed several NOS options on the car so I think this may have been a NOS 2 1/4" tailpipe. The driver side muffler hanger is the generic muffler shop version. I acquired the correct one and am "fixing" that too. Mark C |

I had a repo set many years ago. I believe Dennis Kirban did them.

You'd think there is a market for them. Every point judged automatic GTO or Judge including RA IV with the 2.25 will get points deducted.
