Curious, does anyone have a pic of where it is in the seat, do you just remove the seat and turn it upside down, and boom there it is?

Always wondered that! I dropped my tank and it wasn't there. Mine's a 69 but don't know where to look in the seats!

Finding a build sheet is a hit or miss thing. not so inportant with Pontiac because of PHS paperwork availability, but crucial with Chevy and other GM brands.

Your car may or may not have one, just depends on what the line workers did that day.

On three different Pontiac plant built 68's, I've found it under the carpet by the drivers seat.

The car was built in the Baltimore Plant.

I did the PHS, Just waiting for the wind sticker to come. The PHS tells me color unknown. Hopefully the window sticker will say the color or I find the build sheet in the car and it tells me the color.

My buddy had a special paint code on a 70 Buick {had a dash - } which allowed him to paint the car any shade that his heart desired. I imagine once you get the "window sticker from PHS it may NOT tell you the original shade. The build sheet may not list it either.

Baltimore plant is not so famous for Buildsheet finds - but worth all efforts still.
If it were a 69 - i would bet big money against finding one.
But 68 i would still be completely hopeful.

PHS "makes" the repo window stickers using the data from the BHC - that you already have. The only additional info that might come on the repo window sticker is sometimes they can fill in the original dealer name.
... and only sometimes

They are not defacto photo-copies of defacto original documents
(exact window stickers car-for-car)

Reprinted blanks ... with data from BHC filled in best they can determine.

In the wastebasket.

Build sheets were supposed to be thrown away, but often it was easier to leave them where they lay and build the car up around them. That's why they often have a screw shot through them or sprayed with undercoating, etc.

It varies by plant, shift and worker but - as mentioned - they often are found on top of the tank, under the carpet, inside the seats, inside the door trim, behind the A pillar trim or behind the headliner.

Any place were build information needed to be broadcast to a remote part of the plant and then that part conveyed to the main line.

I can see this being true if they were found under the carpet only. But is seems somewhat "purposeful" for the line worker to place one on top of the gas tank.

Sid - I appreciate your input but your opinion is not correct in this case.

I've watched about 3 million cars go down the line, as well as participating in pre-production builds across 12 GM assembly plants in 35 years. The wastebasket is full of build sheets and manifests right before they leave the final line and move to roll test/alignment/short line repair.

It's just easier to leave it on top of the gas tank than it is to remove it at the end of the line. You will also find extra screws, bottlecaps, vintage coins and empty bottles in the car. The reason is the same.

It was "purposeful", in that it was placed there to help with the build. After the build is complete its purpose had been served.

Thanks Keith...you have a lot of experience! How many build sheets went down the line with each car in 68? Did a build sheet travel the line with the gas tank?

Any place were build information needed to be broadcast to a remote part of the plant and then that part conveyed to the main line, or where the operator had to choose between various option content for a specific car. Usually that means on top of the tank, under the carpet, inside the seats, inside the door trim, behind the A pillar trim or behind the headliner.

So five or six, plus maybe one taped to the front of the frame rails, one on the front of the car (on final line) and one each side on the quarter panel. Those are all gathered up and thrown away.

I should add that some workers got "all" the build sheets, still connected together from the tractor-paper printout. Guys that had to know what was coming for the day - like the manual floor shift guy - would skim through all the build sheets for the day looking for a particular RPO code (like M20). He would sit down at the picnic table before the shift and circle all of them with his red crayon so he (a) would know how many subassemblies to build up ahead of time and (b) so that he could watch for those particular jobs and not miss them. Unfortunately - this would also tell him whether or not his job was over-cycled and whether he could write a union grievance...

Similarly, there would be an inspection ticket for each major area (engine, chassis, trim, LH exterior, RH exterior). These would be gathered up and stapled together where they would follow the car through the build and then on through repair. Those inspection tickets would be thrown away in the shipping building; as a result they are super super rare (I know of only one set that survived for a vintage Pontiac build).
