Have heard that it is important the drive shafts is mounted on the same side as it was taken out.To prevent snapping if they rotate at the other direction or is it harmless to change sides?

I think that falls under the same argument about always throwing out a lock nut, circlips or a head bolt because you're not supposed to reuse anything or it fails under stress. I bought a 69 with an extra rear end missing axles. Put it back together with extra axles I had laying around and drove it hard for years without ever having an issue.

I'm sure in the big picture of perfection, there's a decline in perfect strength quality in all my examples above, but I don't think that tiny decline drops below the threshhold of safety or parts failure in my opinion. Do you trust your seatbelts? According to the experts, you should toss every belt you have and get every one of them re-webbed if they're more than 5 years old or the sun has ever shown on them! I think it's all a conspiracy from the hardware/parts mfgrs/seatbelt companies to make us buy their stuff!

When I took apart a nodular 8.2 10 bolt (was in my 69 GTO w/3.55 gears), it had two different axles. One was the good forged axle (rough texture, tapered), and one was cast (fully machined constant diameter). The forged one was marked with yellow paint. The machined/cast axle was marked with red paint.

FYI - the cars that had the Heavy Duty Saf-T-Track option got the forged axles, 4 pinion "posi", and nodular housing (large N cast on the nose).
