OK, so does anyone have a recommendation on who makes the best replacement headliner? I have most of the interior out of the Black Car and it might be the appropriate time to get a correct replacement.

I would say Legendary as they offer more products and services..Legendary seat covers & door panels were dead on...SMS does not offer door panels...on the other hand its a headliner (perforated)..but I would still choose Legendary, BOB,you should still have the original perforated sunvisors..and my spare arrived today..thankyou!!...and the perforated looks much better than standard as you have deluxe interior

Well I am pretty psyched tonight. I scored a set of NOS bumper guards (sorry if the under bidder is reading this) and they arrived today. The good news is that they are NOS and the rubber is perfect. The bad news is that the past 42 years has not been kind to the chrome and they will need a trip to the chrome shop. The guards on the Black Car have great chrome, but really bad rubber, so there might be a switch in the future. There is a really good rubber shop in the area and I am fairly certain they will be able to produce or procure for me rubber strips that closely replicate the originals. If so, I will have an extra set of guards for the shelves or for barter. We'll see. If they are able to closely recreate the rubber strips I will get extras and let everyone know. If someone already has a source, please speak up.

While I am at it, I want to replace the bumper. I am looking for a good bumper core that can be rechromed. If anyone has or can provide the source for a solid bumper core I would be really appreciative. Here's some shots of the guards. Please let me know if you have a source for the rubber strips or a good core bumper. Thanks.

bumper guards give the car a look I like...question for you BOB, and we may need NJSTEVES input..I was checking your car out on his old thread and I believe he posted photos of the black cars rear package tray..the thing was it was the standard tray, yet you have deluxe interior which should get the mesh tray I believe...any thoughts?..does the black car have a rear speaker?...your tray looked GM..and if for any reason you were to change the tray, LEGENDARY makes the best, it is also $79..I got one and need to post a pix, it is nice, matches the headliner(joking!)...actually I am interested in what NJSTEVE thinks regarding the package tray..thanks!..especially since I know your doing interior work

The original black car thread has the photos of the original rear package tray. It was a non-stereo AM/FM, dual speaker car: one speaker in the front and one in the rear. In case you can't find it, here are the photos. There were some scrapes in the tray so I replaced it with a reproduction tray that was exactly the same (other than having to recut the holes to match the original ones). Neither the tray itself nor the grill or speaker underneath it, had ever been out of the car before. It had some really interesting details, such as the "Siamese Twin" cut outs for the speaker and the foam insulation.

BTW, when you get a new rear bumper remember to install the guards in the correct spot. They are currently in the wrong spot on the black car. They were installed that way when I got it. When I went to move them to the spot where they should be - over the cap bolt holes, I found that there were really big divots in the chrome that looked terrible once the guards were relocated. So I just reinstalled them where they were.

Forgive me if I'm wrong, but wasn't the mesh package tray a 1970/1971 part?

I know for a fact that by 1973 the 'standard tray was use, c/w the metal speaker cover - and it remained that way for the rest of the second generation run...

so safe to say 1972 & up standard & deluxe got a plain cardboard tray?...that 1970 & 71 rear mesh trays were a deluxe interior only and discontinued in 1972?..if this is so, I need to return a mesh tray..

So I think I have a line on an original style 1972 front valance. I know that a lot of fitment work is likely, but my real question is what else is necessary in terms of hardware.

In other words, what all needs to be changed from a hardwware standpoint if switching from a metal 1972 valance to a poly 1972 valance? Is it just the additional fasteners or is some other hardware necessary? I know I need the fasteners and if you have them please let me know - I'm a buyer.

I GOT YOU COVERED BOB...I HAD A SR STEEL VALANCE THAT I REMOVED AND GOT A REPOP OF THE POLY WHEN THEY FIRST CAME OUT..THE POLY ATTATCHES TO THE FRONT BUMPER UNDER THE NOSE..IT SHOULD HAVE SQUARES OF ENDURA CUT OUT AND HOLES DRILLED...I have brand new ADK hardware, the same screws used to secure the grilles to the brackets..the front triangle bracket on the support that holds the hood release is removed...transfer turn signal bezel screw mounting u clips..check under your front nose bumper..they may have put the screws back..I will set some aside when your ready I can post some pix...72 valance looks way better, just sayin!

The polyethylene valance is a much simpler installation than the steel. The only problem can be if the sheet metal style threaded screws used to go into the cut out areas under the nose (as pictured above) have been stripped oversize. Then you have to use some stamped steel nuts to allow the screw threads to engage into.

The lower bolts that go to the underside of the rad support used vary large flat washers to spread the load. They insert into caged nuts that slip onto the underside of the rad support and the lower fender edges. NEVER tighten them more than finger tight (and use Loctite on the threads) - this allows the valance to move fore and aft when the nose of the car moves. If you have ever put a floor jack under the subframe behind the front tires and jacked the car up, you will see how much that urethane nose can deflect away from the fender edges. That is what originally caused these valances to shatter (along with the rad support mounting holes being about an inch off).

There is also a very small center support bracket that Norwood reproduces, that goes under the hood latch support beam at the bottom.

Can anyone tell me if the 1972 parts catalog shows all the parts and an exploded diagram of the original style valance and its' installation? I've been looking for a reason to get a 1972 parts catalog and maybe this is it. I like the paper books better than the CD's - they just seem more user friendly.

Actually the 71 (and maybe the 70) manual shows it, as it was supposed to be introduced when the second gen car was initially introduced but production problems delayed it.

Deluxe 72 is NOT mesh, that is a fact.. Have not seen mesh on any 72 I have parted, thats standard, Esprit ( mandatory deluxe) or Formula, or T/A ( S, T, U or V)
but never say never, a early one, built in Sept 71, ya never know....
