I LIKE THE 72 ASSEMBLY MANUAL FOR DETAIL..THEN LOOK TO THE PARTS BOOK FOR DETAILED INFORMATION ON THE HARDWARE..I PREFER A PAPER BOOK TOO..THESE DRAWINGS & PART #S SHOW DIFFERANT LENGTH BOLTS..BUT IN REAL LIFE THE ASSEMBLERS (AS FAR AS I HAVE CHECKED) USED THE COMMON #....314 INNER FENDER BOLTS USED ALL OVER THE FRONT OF THE CAR..ALSO SEE THE SPECIAL SELF TAPPING SCREWS FOR THE INSTALLATION OF THE VALANCE TO THE BUMPER..THESE SCREWS ARE ALSO USED ON THE GRILLS TO THE BRACKETS..AGAIN SAME HARDWARE NEAR THE SAME LOCATION

Sometimes we forget that Steve is an educated lawyer and just dose this car thing so he can hang with us and look smart.
Sometimes I just can't believe that I come up with this stuff......

And you even created it from my photos and drawings which is much more impressive example of your skills, in my opinion! |

So the Black Car has new kick panels. To the best of my knowledge the kick panels were original. The passenger side was really scuffed up and had a lot of deep gouges. The drivers side was in better shape, but it had a cut out for a Rube Goldberg interior hood release. At some point in the Black Cars previous life it had been the subject of criminal activity and the owner at the time rigged up an interior hood release. NJSteve removed all the hardware, but the kick panel cutout remained.
Originally I thought I would try to clean up, fix and re-dye the originals, but once I got them out that idea did not seem like a winner so I ordered replacements. The replacement kick panels were OER brand. They were high quality pieces that I am very happy with. In comparison to the original units the biggest difference was that texture/graining was slightly smoother. Also, the bubble on the passenger side that covered the vacuum actuator was slightly different in how it was shaped at the top and it did not have any sound deadening. Regardless, the bubble fit fine (actually better) and I simply transplanted the sound deadening from the old to the new. In terms of process, everything went pretty well. I struggled getting the old passenger side out without removing the heater box, but eventually it came out. I worried more about getting the new in without scratching it, but it went in great - much easier than I anticipated. For waterproofing I used 3M black strip-calk and it worked fine. The biggest problem was that the working quarters were very tight and several of the locations for retaining screws left no room for a screw driver. If you do this, get the absolute shortest screwdriver made. Here's a few (actually more than a few) pictures comparing the original kick panels and the new OER kick panels. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

I NOTICED THE GRAIN ON THE KICK PANELS..MY UNERSTANDING IS GM TOOLING WAS FAR BETTER...ON THE OTHER HAND THEY ARE NICE AND I DOUBT ANYONE IS STARING DOWN THERE...MY PASSENGER SIDE WAS A GM REPLACEMENT...STRANGELY THEY CAME IN DARK BLUE (MINE WAS NOT DYED TO MATCH)....I WOULD RATHER HAVE THESE IN BLACK THAN O.E.M. AND I WOULD HAVE TO DYE THEM...THE REAR 1/4 SEAT PANELS & UPPER SAILS ARE EXCELLANT...AGAIN, MOLDED IN BLACK AND MANY OTHER COLOURS...THE 72-77 FRONT LOWER DOOR PANELS ARE ALSO NOW REPOPED IN COLOURS
