Count me as another who lives with one functional kidney. You're very fortunate to have your sister willing to help you. Positive thoughts and prayers to both of you. Hope everything goes well. Best of luck to you.

Greg

Damn BJ, I didn't know this! Good luck and I know you'll come through this and be back 100%. I also know how it feels to deal with kidney problems. I've been dealing with Stage IV kidney failure for about 4 years now. 40% functioning the doctors tell me, but it's been very stable ever since we discovered it. I'm also anemic, so some days I just don't feel like doing nothing but just sitting in my chair.

You'll do great; and I hope to see you soon.

Thanks all for the kind encouragement and prayers. Had a long day of pre-op admission and testing today. I think I am ready for this and feel very thankful for my sister's generosity. I think the key to long term success will be my discipline in complying with post transplant immunosupressant therapy and exercise. My dad had the same thing and got his transplant in 1990. He kept his kidney 11 years before he died from complications due to a bladder infection. If I can stay healthy; conform to my diet and medications, I shoud expect to keep this kidney many years.

Thumbs up

Best of luck to you. Please keep us apprised as to your post-op status.

As a matter of curiosity, is the load of the (immunosupressive) drugs you have to take a lower dosage due to the same gene pool?

Yep, got the pink dot on my DL as well.

I was in touch with Beth a couple times today and just got the update that BJ is back in his room and as she put it "making lots of pee!!!" so that's a good thing. His sister had a little bit of trouble with some bleeding when they were removing her kidney but she is going to be fine.

Just our luck, he's going to be around for a while!

Thanks for all the kind thoughts and prayers guys. My new kidney is doing great! They are really pouring the fluids to me via I.V. drips. I've been making about three gallons of urine a day now. I am more than past being ready for this dang catheter to come out, which is supposed to happen today.

My sister's nephrectomy had some complications. They did it robotically and somehow the device that was supposed to staple the artery before cutting her kidney loose failed to function properly and she nearly bled out on the operating table. The surgeon had to make an emergency incision to allow him to reach in with his hand to clamp the artery until it could be repaired. My sister will be fine, but will have a larger scar, more pain and a little longer recovery than anticipated. She was supposed to be able to go home yesterday but will probably not go home until tomorrow which is when I am supposed to go home. I am sorry she had to go through all of this for me but we are all just very thankful that The Lord was watching over us both, and that the surgeon recognized what had happened and knew what he had to do to save her.

I am amazed at how quickly my numbers are coming back to normal range. I am sore and probably won't be banging any gears for a while, but I am confident that I will bounce back quickly. Medical science is simply amazing! Thanks again for all your prayers. God is good and has answered them all!

BJ

Glad to be here Chris! When I get this behind me we'll have to start looking for another car IF I have any money left after all the immunosuppressant drugs! They are higher than NOS round port parts!
