Wait for several weeks when they come to you and tell you that they have to remove a s
small stent between your kidney and bladder. Guess how they do that. That's right and the doctor said that it would bee a little uncomfortable. If that was a little uncomfortable I would hate to feel what regular uncomfortable is. Jon

They waited until right as I was being discharged to tell me about that. Going back on the 29th to have it removed. Not looking forward to that. They also didn't tell me that all the fluids they were giving me would cause my scrotum to swell to the size of a dang grapefruit!

I haven't checked in for a while, Just came across this thread. Really glad to hear you had a great loving sister to help you through your problem. Talk about your ultimate family bond! Hope everything continues to go well.
This brings an interesting question to mind,,, In an event like this, will an insurance company pay for surgery and medical care for a donor because its medically necessary?

If thats a personal question then just ignore it, I just got wondering. I just can't stand how insurance companies are always treating people bad, I could almost hear them saying " this is your problem not hers "

Thanks! We are both doing well and you are right; I am blessed to have such a loving sister. My healthcare plan is with Humana and they have been fantastic. They will pay 100% of the cost of my sister's testing, evaluation, surgery, meds, follow-up, etc. They even assigned an RN to my case who has been calling and checking on me regularly.

Nice to read about a positive experience with a healthcare provider for a change. If you pay any attention to the media outlets lately (I try not to) they are all out to kill us and steal our money....and not necessarily in that order.

Ever listen to 'The Kimmer' on 106.7? He was on another Atlanta talk radio station years ago until they changed formats and he moved to Florida, he's been back about a year now-- Kim Peterson. Anyway, he had some problems with his Humana plan after his heart attack a few months back and he sure let's everyone know about it!

Yeah, I like the Kimmer. Especially his "Newsmaker Line". I heard him on a radio station at a home cookin' restaurant a few weeks before my surgery and that was the first I knew that he was back in town. I missed his rant on Humana. Hope my experience is good. We're about to find out as the bills start coming in! I did receive a pre-authorization letter with an authorization code and stating that the transplant was approved as well as "up to 500 follow-up visits" in 2014. My Humana RN has told me that he is my main contact on any "system disapprovals" that might occur if doctors don't code invoices correctly. I expect we'll have some instances of that. Beth is great at dealing with insurance companies so we'll see what happens.

Little Update:

My creatinine levels, which are a prime benchmark for measuring kidney function, have been slowly trending back up after the transplant. This while my Prograf levels (Prograf is the primary anti-rejection medication I'm taking) are staying in target range. My nephrology team thinks that there might be some early signs of rejection, or it could just be Prograf Toxicity causing the increase. The only way to find out was by doing a needle biopsy of the new kidney.

That was done on Monday morning, the 28th. I had to check back in to the hospital on Sunday, stay overnight and then lie flat for 6 hours after the biopsy because of the risk of bleeding. Went home Monday evening.

Back at the hospital Tuesday for follow-up labs. They showed creatinine levels still elevated. Got the biopsy results Tuesday afternoon and it was determined that they didn't get a good enough sample. So - it was back down there again today for more labs and the final determination that they now want to repeat the needle biopsy tomorrow.

So, I will head back down to the hospital tomorrow morning at 7:00 AM, for a 9:00 biopsy, and then lie flat for 6 hours, etc. ... The watch word is patience at this point, as they work through this to figure out what is going on. I should know more by late in the day on Friday.
