I just got a good laugh out of my old man, he said weight distribution didn't have anything to do with it, he ordered it so he could screw in the back seat, but after he ordered it, he couldn't even fit in the back seat!, but it worked good hauling his suitcases back and forth from college.

I probably had the only Brass Hat 1968 Firebird Red Ext, Black Int. and White Vinyl top, RA II, Close ratio 4 spd., highest ratio rear end avail. at the time, and loaded with all of the options available.

It was delivered by Knafel Pontiac and when I switched to my next Co. Car it was sold to Knafel Pontiac. I do not have the VIN. # from back then. Back then John DeLorean had a RA II, dark hardtop with auto, that I had the pleasure to take for a spin while I was attending a training class in the Old Pontiac building down in the Executive garage area. He had Engineering build one with A-C, that was not available with the RA II engine, and was not driving the one I drove.

I often wonder what ever happened to the one I drove as it was highly optioned compared to others. At the time when we ordered one for Company Car use we loaded all of the options we could as we did not have to pay for the car, LOL. I only drove my cars for 3,000 or 30 days before I switched to another car. Great benefit to a car guy back then.

Nope.
We actually don't have ANY of the data on that car IIRC - even though it has been shown and displayed many times at many places. Nobody gets the goods on it.
If it had sold at Royal - that would have been a major part of its display i would expect.


With magazines having lead time involved - and cover dated May 68 - that Royal car is probably an upgraded Ram1 car. Maybe even pre-production top end pieces since the production heads didn't start dating until like what - Mid April (Dxx8) ?

Anyone have that magazine or article ?

Jim Mattison at PHS could pull up the BHC Document for you as a momento if you inquired with him. He is "supposed" to have all the Deuce Birds earmarked/tagged.
That one would be easy enough to find in that small'ish data pool by the dealer, colors, and contents.
IF that is true about them being earmarked.

More than likely a small fee would be involved.

Do you know anything about the Tin Indians - Deuce Bird or Deuce GTO that Knafel raced in 68 ? Anything at all would be interesting.

M_C's engine came from a car with a Painted White Roof , not Vinyl.
He would probably remanufacture a car for that engine if the BHC showed Knafel as the dealer !! haha

bvz my engine came out of a car that indeed was delivered to knafel. I have looked for years for the car. back in the day states would gladly give out past info. ohio said they had no record of the car ever being registered in their state. I always wandered if it was one of their race cars, but bill didn't think so with it being red. he did tell me that it was common for racers to buy cars and never title them. I know this to be true as my 69 judge race car was bought new here in Oklahoma and was never titled until I bought it.

The car I ordered and drove had a White Vinyl top not painted, I never ordered any two tone cars in the 20 years I drove Company Cars.

Not aware of Knafel ever representing it as one - only the 68 GTO.
(The car even had a round mirror which pointed to it being an early car.)


As of a few years ago, the guy who bought it off John’s brother still owned it. Needed some work but still painted the same.
