Rain, Rain, Rain! Again for Quali! And how about that poor old Maldonado's luck this week? Can't start the race any further back than he will - 22nd.

I'd have to say I agree with Hobbs' that the drivers are way too distracted by Engineering talk, asking them to make continual setting changes - EVERY LAP - and minute brake pedal pressure on this yr's "brake by wire" adjusting Frt to Rr Bias, etc. while driving @ 180+ mph...!!!

Maldonado's running into pit road entrance wall video replay clearly shows this IMO.

Watch out Hamilton, Red Bull's on your tail!

FIA technical expert says Total fuel may be damaging Red Bull fuel sensor
Red Bull had more fuel-sensor issues in China

LAT PHOTOGRAPHIC - Red Bull has had multiple problems with the fuel-flow sensor in 2014 and there is no clear solution in sight.

The fuel supplied by French oil giant Total could be causing Red Bull Racing’s repeated problems with the mandatory Formula One fuel-flow sensor in 2014.

It was revealed that in qualifying for the F1 Chinese Grand Prix in Shanghai, the reigning world champions struck trouble with the Gill-supplied device yet again. To avoid a Melbourne-style disqualification, Red Bull reportedly adhered to an interim agreement reached with the governing FIA to revert to other measurements in the event of a sensor failure.

In the meantime, the search for the problem continues.
German publication Speed Week has quoted the FIA’s technical expert, Fabrice Lom, as explaining that the Total-supplied fuel is probably the culprit.

“On the sensor, there is a seal that the chemical composition of the Total fuel could be damaging,” Lom reportedly said. “If this is happening, then the sensor would not work correctly.”

Less clear, however, is why the Total fuel is damaging mainly Red Bull sensors, rather than the ones used by the other three Renault-powered teams.

Meanwhile, it appears Red Bull is not ready to forgive rival Mercedes, after the German team called on the reigning world champions to be banned for three races for appealing Daniel Ricciardo’s Melbourne disqualification.

Mercedes chairman Niki Lauda on Saturday made a peace-offering in the form of a Sachertorte, a famous recipe of Vienna chocolate cake.

But Red Bull consultant Dr. Helmut Marko told Bild, “He thinks everything is over with a cake. I think the next time he wants to eat with us, he should put on a bulletproof vest.”

Bernie Ecclestone to have help running Formula One during trial
F1’s chief legal officer to take on larger role

LAT PHOTOGRAPHIC - Bernie Ecclestone's required court appearances will largely work around his Formula One schedule.

Bernie Ecclestone will lean heavily on the help of 44-year-old Sacha Woodward-Hill when his corruption trial begins this week in Germany.

The F1 chief executive has already admitted he will need extra help when he is tied up in court for two days of every week in a bid to stay out of jail.

Britain’s Daily Mail newspaper revealed that the person to whom the 83-year-old Briton’s load will fall is Australian Woodward-Hill, already F1’s chief legal officer.

“She has been involved in every major deal of recent years and holds 17 directorships in Formula One-connected businesses,” said correspondent Jonathan McEvoy.
An insider confirmed, “He [Ecclestone] will rely on her more than ever while the court stuff is going on. She’ll be Bernie’s rock.”

Ecclestone, whose trial begins on April 24, was not in China this past weekend. Ecclestone will appear in court for two days a week (on Tuesday and Wednesday). The trial is expected to last throughout the summer.

Arrow Better Late Than Never?

To me this is comical in light of the radical (and extremely expensive) 2015 Car, Fuel, and Tire rules changes. A Proactive leadership would be have been ahead of this instead of "following their own mandated costly rules" changes with a "cost reduction summit" in a "kumbaya" like aftermath meet.
--------------
Formula One to hold cost-cutting summit on May 1
Smaller teams continue push to cap costs in the sport

LAT PHOTOGRAPHIC - Sauber F1 team principal Monisha Kaltenborn, right, says that the series could be coming to a critical financial crossroad soon. At left is Sauber driver Nico Hulkenberg.

Formula One has moved to put cost-cutting efforts back on the agenda.

Earlier, it was reported FIA president Jean Todt was considering new measures to cut costs after the new top team-dominated Strategy Group blocked his move to impose budget caps in 2015. A meeting for May 1 has now been called.

"Time is running out," team principal Monisha Kaltenborn, whose Sauber team ran into high-profile financial strife last year, is quoted by the German news agency DPA. "Actually, the time for this decision is long gone, but it's never too late."

F1's smaller teams are angry that their more powerful rivals are thwarting moves to reduce spiraling costs, and reportedly threatening to challenge the Strategy Group against European competition laws.

"It's not about small or big teams," insisted Force India chief Bob Fernley, "it's about the future of Formula One."

World champion team Red Bull team principal Christian Horner, however, insists the biggest teams are not opposed to reducing costs.

(Sound Familiar? ) "We need to identify the cost drivers and equalise the playing field for everyone," said Horner, who added that a budget cap was not the right solution.
"How would a budget limit of $200 million help Sauber? They wouldn't save a single dollar," he claimed.

A key meeting, to be presided over by Todt and F1 boss Bernie Ecclestone, will now take place on May 1, between the Chinese and Spanish Grand Prix.

"Hopefully we will find some solutions, and it's not another of those meetings where we do not make a lot of progress," Kaltenborn concluded.

Arrow Why it matters:"A billion would last a new team owner four years.”

Gene Haas unsure if Formula One team will launch in 2015 or 2016
Haas Formula won't select drivers for several months

Stewart-Haas Racing co-owner Gene Haas is moving forward with plans to field a Formula One race team in the near future.
The latest American effort to field a Formula One team faces an uphill struggle to be ready by next year. Called Haas Formula, it will be headquartered both in North Carolina and Europe using a crew and support personnel from both sides of the Atlantic. It will have a “technical partnership” with Ferrari or Mercedes, but beyond that its design is a work in progress. Its two drivers -- perhaps Americans, but not necessarily -- likely won't be selected for several months.
Those were some of the details outlined on Monday by team principal Gene Haas, owner of Haas Automation and co-owner of NASCAR-focused Stewart-Haas Racing. The 61-year-old Californian met with the media in Charlotte Monday, five days after the FIA approved his application to become a team owner. He was joined at the briefing by co-principal Guenther Steiner, an Italian with extensive F1 experience as technical director for Jaguar and Red Bull.
Haas is a longtime F1 fan with (reportedly) enough money to build a team from scratch.

According to F1 boss Bernie Ecclestone, “[Haas] has the money, but it's a question of whether he's going to spend it. A billion would last a new team owner four years.” To that, Haas said, “We have a budget and the numbers I've seen are reasonable. We're not going to just throw money at it, which is the European style. We'll control our costs and apply the same parameters to this as we do with the [Haas Automation] machine parts business. We'll bring in a more rational way of doing things.”

Haas and Steiner touched on almost every imaginable F1 topic during the session:
-- “We should know within the next four weeks whether it'll be 2015 or 2016,” Steiner said. “We need to pick a technical partner and go from there. We don't want to jump in and then say, 'Hey, this is wrong.' If it's not doable with a good, professional team by '15, we'll go for '16. We can't do it all ourselves; we'll rely heavily on our partner.”

Said Haas, “It would be insurmountable for us to hire the right people and build the chassis and be prepared to race to win in nine months. Our first goal is to arrive at the first race and race the car… that's our main focus. But we have to depend on partners for the chassis and drivetrain and engines. At first, our cars will come from them, but my ultimate goal is to be a constructor. I want to evolve the cars so we can beat the Europeans at their own game.”

-- “We'd like an experienced Formula One driver to start with, maybe someone familiar with the current rules,” Haas said. “And it would be ideal to have a young American driver, too. At the moment, we haven't done anything about that. We'd like an experienced driver who'll be available (out of his current ride) in six months.”

Then, with a slight grin, he added, “It would be impossible for any of our Cup drivers [Tony Stewart, Danica Patrick, Kevin Harvick or Kurt Busch] to do it.” (Thank God!)

-- One of Haas' overriding goals is to expand the worldwide footprint of his machine-tool business. The California-based company will sponsor Haas Formula early on, but his five-year business plan is to eventually find additional financial resources. It's taken him three years to get his license, and he's planning to make the most of it.

“I want to change Haas Automation into a premium brand,” he said. “If people see that we're in Formula One, they'll know we're good because only the best is involved in Formula One. We sell a lot of tool-making products in Europe and in the Far East, South America, Australia -- all over the world. And I like the World Championship angle of Formula One. It's the most-watched motorsports series in the world -- very well-followed -- and I want to sell more products to the rest of the world using Formula One.

-- “The FIA told us to elect which year we want to come in,” Haas said. “We'll have to do that by next month. To me, '15 is too close and '16 is too far. If we delay until '16, we'll spend more money just getting ready. It's a tough decision that we have to make in the next few weeks. I'd like to beg, borrow or steal a car to arrive with at the first race next year and compete. But that might depend on which technical partner we use. FIA made us commit to at least two years and would like us to be there until 2020. … So we committed for six years."

-- Steiner spent several years in Formula One and was part of Red Bull's successful NASCAR Sprint Cup team. He agrees with Haas that the European style of throwing money at everything seldom solves the big problems.

“It can be done differently,” Steiner said of running an F1 team. “I've seen the waste and I know we can do it more reasonably. We'll partner with someone and use their expertise, which will make us more efficient. And, yes, we've already started contacting people [about filling key spots]. We couldn't do much until we got the license last week.”

-- Haas Automation has office space and a building in Brussels, which might serve at its European home. But Haas and Steiner are adamant that the true home of Haas Formula will be Kannapolis, N.C., on the same campus as the Stewart-Haas Racing stock-car team.
“Nothing is set in stone,” Haas said about the European location, “but the Brussels building is available. Or we might have a smaller shop in Germany or Italy, depending on what our technical partner wants. We want to build the parts and pieces here [in North Carolina] and send them to where the car is during the European part of the season.”

Said Steiner, “During the season, there's no difference in being here and being in Europe. The cars are flown [by F1] from race to race, and the work is done at the track the weekend of the race. Teams fly in the parts and pieces they need for that weekend. The cars don't go back after each race. It's not like NASCAR.”

Finally, this from Haas:
“The FIA analyzed us pretty closely [before issuing a license]. We know this will be a helluva challenge … very difficult … but similar to what we do in Sprint Cup every day. We'll find the right people to do the right job and let them do it. We won't make it any more complicated than it already is. There's no reason we can't do it. You know, it's a car with an engine and four tires and you race it … and we do that here all the time.

“I want to prove that Americans can do this, that we can do it and win. I'll try, even if I fail. But there will be great satisfaction in proving to others that we did what other Americans couldn't do. The beauty is in finding things impossible to do and then doing them. I don't want to fail, but I'll feel worse about it if I don't even try.”

Thxs for the heads up.

Locally our Comcast Velocity Channel lists those shows as:
Hunt vs. Lauda: F1's Greatest Racing Rivals - Examing the story behind the 2013 movie RUSH http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b0377tb1
Senna - The 2010 movie http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1424432/
Saw these both last yr. They are both excellent and definitely worth seeing again IMO.

Yes. Thought it was bad enough with ESPN dissing & pre-empting NHRA Drag-races for NCAA Women's Softball, Cheerleader competitions, etc...but then again SOCCER is the #1 World Wide Sport so they tell me! So not a big surprise with the F1 bump, although perhaps Bernie wouldn't of allowed that to happen if he wasn't distracted by his trial.

Hamilton's conversation w Engineering was quite entertaining. Rosberg almost pulled off the win overtaking Hamilton, almost!

And, you've gotta hand it to Vettal working his way from 15th place start to 4th finish right behind Riccardo, who finally earned a blemish free podium position.

I was surprised that Vettel did so well, considering how bad his car was. But then again, he's a 4-time champion, the kid can drive.

Interesting to see how the teams matched up, with teammates finishing together. Mercedes 1-2, then Red Bull 3-4, then Bottas (Williams), then Ferrari 6-7. Lewis Hamilton was not having a good day with his team. He seemed like he was questioning everything they said, and it counded like he didn't trust them, or didn't agree with their decisions. Nico Rosberg is a force to be reckoned with, and I think we'll see contact between Hamilton and Rosberg on track, soon.

The rant that Wil Buxton did on Pastor Maldonado was one of the funniest things I've heard from this announcing crew (not taking anything away from David Hobbs' classic lines).

Buxton said something like, "Maldonado (Lotus) does not have his head in the game. He blames everyone but himself. He blames the car, the setup, the engine, the team. So I asked him who's fault it was when he ran off the track all by himself. Was it the wall's fault, or the corner's fault?"

Brilliant stuff.

Agreed. I'll bet Webber is grinning from ear-to-ear over Seb's "struggles" with his "identical Red Bull" car.

Agree on the anti-Maldonaldo rants. Perhaps attempt to "Montoya him" like in NASCAR? Brings to mind the question if Will Buxton has actually ever competitively driven an F1 racer where he is so critical?

"Mercedes to use megaphone exhaust during practice"
Quote:
Mercedes is preparing to show off a louder engine note during the Spanish grand prix weekend.

Early this week, team chief Toto Wolff revealed that one proposed solution to the turbo V6 sound ‘problem’ is a sort of “megaphone” addition to the exhaust.

Along with Ferrari and Renault, F1′s three engine makers have been considering how to spice up the sound of F1 2014, after some spectators and promoters were shocked at the difference compared to the screaming V8s of 2013.

“The solutions range from very complex solutions within the exhaust system down to a simple megaphone at the back,” Wolff is quoted by Kolner Express newspaper.

“The ‘megaphone’ is a parallel exhaust that simply opens up at the end, with all the problems that brings with it,” the Austrian added.

Insiders say Wolff is concerned that the solution will interrupt the thermal and aerodynamic integration between the ‘power unit’ and the current exhaust layout.

Nonetheless, he said that sound solutions will be tried on the W05 car at the post-race Barcelona test next week.

But Germany’s Bild newspaper claims that Mercedes’ plan is actually to test the ‘megaphone’ exhaust during free practice for the Spanish grand prix on Friday.

“Bild’s information is that the solution will be testing in the morning,” said correspondent Lennart Wermke. “Whether it is also used in the race is still open.”...

Wink Monaco tune in alert! Massa Sez it'll be a "Sideways" race challenge.

Monaco Practice televised starting today.

Felipe Massa: Monaco Grand Prix even tougher with 2014 F1 cars
"Felipe Massa believes this weekend's Monaco Grand Prix will be the toughest race of the 2014 Formula 1 season.
Quote:
The Brazilian, who took pole position for the 2008 Monte Carlo event, believes the combination of lower downforce and increased engine torque thanks to this year's regulations will make Monaco tougher than ever for the drivers.

"I think Monaco will be a very, very difficult race," said Massa when asked by AUTOSPORT about the challenge of driving the latest generation of car on the Monte Carlo streets.

"We drive with the car a lot more sideways.

"The torque we have from the engine is maybe double what we had last year, and the grip from the tyre is not very high, so Monaco will be a very easy race to crash.

"I think it will be the toughest race of the season."

Force India driver Sergio Perez agreed that Monaco would present a particularly tough challenge, especially as the rear tyres go off.

"It is going to be a very interesting one - you will see a lot of drivers bouncing off the barriers," said the Mexican.

"These cars are really tricky to drive. If you hit some degradation it will be very hard to do anything."..."
