This spaces the axle mounting flange by .250" creating the end play. The gap has to be filled, hence the shims.
I just watch Powerblock....well now called Powernation today and the "Detroit Muscle" episode in which they're modifying a TA I'm supposed to win......well maybe.Anyway I found it interesting they were adapting a set of rear disc brakes to the 8.5 rear. They used a saetup from98-02 Camaros and as they prepared to put on the mounting plate they showed using a 1/8" spacer.....(not 1/4") for taking out the axle slack. That was a c-clip axle. Can't say why or if that would work,.......suppose i'll just have to wait till I win the car when they give it away......... uh I hope

I was watching too. The spacer, I assume, is to line up the caliper with the rotor. I'm guessing the end-play I experienced isn't an issue with c-clip axles. Good luck with the TA!

The spacer is just to align or center the rotor in the caliper abutment bracket. I am running the ls rears. The rotor is not perfectly center but it does not need to be either since the calipers float.

As long as the pads easily ride in the machined part of the abutment bracket close is good enough. The pads should still wear evenly.

As far as axle end play it is what it is unless you want to play with different c clips and such. I am running a detroit trutrak that has a "button" that you wedge between the axles to eliminate play. Per their tech line I welded mine up thicker and machined back to flat. I have to have two buddies pull on both axles while I wedge the button in there now. I get about .005 play if I remember on the axles now.

Good to know slack within these calipers isn't that much of an issue and seems easy to address.Of course if I experience any slack in the axles themselves i'll make adjustments to correct that as such slack to me compromises both driveability&safety.Appreciate the sharing of info!

Because I travel, I decided to purchase all new parts for the S10 upgrade. One item I have not purchased is the caliper bolts. These bolts attach the caliper bracket to the backing plate (2 per side). I went to the Nasty Z28 thread that lists all the part numbers and the part number listed for these bolts (15726460) has been replaced according to GM Parts Direct. The supposed replacements are $15/bolt.

Does anyone know where I can get these bolts besides a salvage yard? Do they have some special feature or could I just use regular grade 8 bolts?

There's nothing special about these bolts; I think they are Grade 5 stock....I just replaced mine with Grade 8. While you're shopping for bolts, the axle tube flange studs need to be longer by about 3/8" inch, and again Grade 8 is fine, with lockwashers.

Default 8.5-12bolt rear s10 disc

I did the (s10-blazer) rear disc brake kit on my 69 firebird 12 bolt, there is two different size rotors, one more being deep than other, I also purchase the same spacer from ebay, but I had to grind the inside about 1/16 if I recalled, I bought longer 10mm mounting bolts from home Depot, originals were short. sice mine car has stagger shocks, I purchase two calipers and 1 short hose from same side of wreck-yard 02 blazer, 1 brake hose is way longer than other if I recalled it was from 98-2002 chevy 1500..this one loops over the diff. and I fabbed my brackets to hold them in place...Is was a nice project for me, but honestly it was alittle pita , I was better off buying ebay rear kit and after you are done buying all your parts cost about same or more...i can say this they work great on my car...good luck guys--here are some pictures...

I beleive for hand brake cables 88-95 pontiac coupe cars are used since they are shorter..

Great pics man! The s10 backing plates threw me for a second because I forgot the parking bracket cable mounting tab was integrated unlike the ls stuff. S1o set up looks a lot cleaner.

Wish I would have researched more if I would have run those backing plates with the larger ls rotors.

Tell me more about the shims you used. Did you use these?

How did you adapt them? Anything you can remember would be great.

They're exactly the ones I got, but they left me with too much end play. I can't help thinking I'm missing something though.

yes those are the spacers, I remember using them but they wouldn't fit on the housing end, they were a tad smaller ID. so I got a hand file and filled them out till they fit, also the caliper support brackets were a little tricky because of the hand brake cable ears had to face forward, on this one I cant remember the details, if your car has shocks mounted on the back then is easier cause calipers go on front and wont interfere, also after I installed the spacers the caliper still wasnt center enough to center the caliper so I put SS washers between caliper and bracket, about 1/8 to center the caliper...remember I used the deep brake rotors, not sure if it would be easier with other shallow rotors..they work great...I didnt even used 4WDB brake proportioning valve...using oem brake booster system dual reservoir..I wish I had taken pictures and documented all i did. would have being eaiser to pass all info to you guys..hope this help

Correct me if I have the wrong logic here. It looks like the eBay spacers push the backing plate assemblies out (say about 3/16") and then the extra washers pull the caliper back a bit (say an 1/8").
