Default 70 clock knob

I've done a search and it seems I may be missing something on my clock knob. I attached a pic of what I have. Does anyone have a close up pic of a 70 knob installed? As it is, the piece I have kind of fits loosely on the stem, it seems like it is threaded but the threads don't really catch well.

A nice close-up of a '71 with the knob caught in the pulled out position.

Thanks for the response! That pic really helps. Looks like I am missing a piece. Do you know if the piece in my pic should actually thread into the stem or does the other piece somehow lock it in? I'm just wondering if my knob or clock stem may be striped.

Your piece is probably cross threaded. You should be able to see if the threads on the stem are stripped when piece is removed removed.

OK, I guess I'll have to break out the magnifying glass (eyes aren't what they used to be). I guess if the threads on the stem are good I'll have to get one of the newer style knobs since I'll probably never find another early style one.

You're missing two pieces. There's also a spacer not shown in HFR's pic.

The threads will strip easily on these trying to remove them, many are put back with glue after a clock, or face fix.

This is the only knob it had in 1970 and is correct

This below is wrong, has the 70 knob on top the late 71 (and up) bottom. should be slim screw in there instead of the black top, there was no need to for 2 knurled knobs..

A picture of what the bottom knob should look like Birds after Dec of 1970 ( roughly) the 2 parts on left is a repop of it

No offense to the posters here just trying to clear up stuff...

Held For Ransoms picture is correct. The flower shape piece is the attaching screw that retains the knob. The '70-72 knob is different than the '73-92 knob.

This is the correct setup, with the spacer I mentioned. HFR, your knob is actually in the "home" position -- looks pulled out because no spacer.

I maintain that the 70 only had the black plastic cap, by itself... Have had a few and still have an original. I have a march 72 as well, and it has the metal slim screw holding the knurled base.

FWIW - I have two 70 gauge gauge clusters and neither one has a spacer. The 70 and 71 factory assembly manuals both call out the same flower knob but no spacer.

This NOS clock setup on E-bay has the correct knob but again no spacer.

I have two NOS set ups of this early clock knob., I side with HFR on this one. I know there are two part numbers for these two pieces that make up the knob. I have never seen the spacer shown. Too lazy to find it in the assembly manual, but do remember I found 2 of the outer knob NOS and took me forever to find the inner piece- ended up having to buy a NOS standard firebird clock assembly just to get the inner part.. Someone here must have a picture of these two pieces disassembled. .The chrome repos are later models. I know 70-71 used the two piece black/brown bake-a-lite pieces, The original picture that started this thread looks like he just has the outer piece and is missing the inner, larger piece.,

Rob.. just looked at the ebay auction you referenced. That is exactly the two bake-a-lite pieces I was describing. I had to buy one of those clock set ups to get that inner piece. That is definitely an "unobtainable" piece by itself. And that is what the guy who started this thread is missing...

Here's a pic disassembled. The parts are actually metal. I have no reason to believe the spacer is not original to the car. It matches perfectly and why would someone add it - let alone find a tiny spacer like that?

Yes, they should be metal pieces not plastic. I just find it hard to believe there was a spacer (or collar or cover, etc.). As you can see from the picture there really wasn't a reason for one, which is why I had it pulled out to take picture.

The Camaro, at least in '73, did have one but was more of a plastic tube.

Yes, it is rather strange, as the setup appears to work either way. With the spacer, one doesn't have to pull as far to set the clock. With the knob removed, one can see the actual home position.
