First on a side note ... Ever notice on CL that at least 2/3 of the people listing cars and parts don't know the word console? I've seen council, consul, consil ... Anyway.
I've kinda set my sights on a 68 Tempest or LeMans so I can have a little more fun with it - not be bound by the immense respect I have for the GTO and my desire to see them returned to factory options and colors. That said I was looking at some great pictures of the 68/69 Beaumonts from Canadian Pontiac and once I got over the sick feeling I got when I saw anything carrying the Pontiac name running a Chevy drive train I really kinda dug the interior combo of Pontiac and Chevy parts. So my question. 68 chevelle automatic center console in a 68 Tempest or LeMans with a turbo 400 ... anyone done it or potential issues? Thanks! |

Maybe I wasn't clear enough... Beaumont's use the chevelle console ... Anyone ever use one on a GTO, Tempest, LeMans? Far as I know floor and tunnel are the same would the cable run the same way? Would all the bolt points be the same?

I saw a '70 LeMans with a Chevelle console and that horseshoe shifter a couple of weeks ago. Looked fine as far as fit, etc.

Yea they looked pretty good in the Beaumont that's why I even considered it. Then I started looking around and they actually reproduce the Chevelle center console and shifter, and for a decent price! (Did you know the 69 or 70 Chevelle console has a locking hatch? That's just cool.)
It's murder trying to find a 68 console for a GTO/LeMans/Tempest, much less one in decent shape. And don't get me started on trying to find a decent dual gate. They do not reproduce a 68 console for a Pontiac and I have heard the 69 version is nothing to write home about. No one is reproducing the dual gate. So anyway it seemed like a decent option for a resto-mod. |

Well dang. Keep a hold of a nice example of each and I'll hit you up once I bag a car.

I'm sure you could find a decent '68 auto console on this site too. Not exactly rare.

I'm tired of 'disk breaks'. 'Duel exhaust' and 'Pontiac big block's

They show up from time to time, but are hard to find in good condition.

Yeah even "Big Chief" on Street Outlaws referred to his '70 GTO Judge as having a small block Pontiac...? WTH??

Yea I have come across the occasional 68 console but I have not seen a nice one (for sale) since I had my 68 GTO back in the 90's.
They are not rare but the good ones are spoken for, for the most part. Yea the rampant misinformation found on Craigslist is enough to make you nutty. From what people call things, to spelling, general understanding of Pontiac. UGH ![]() I think I said in another thread don't get me started on all the cloning going on, and what people think it makes a car worth. "Oh I bought GTO badges for $50 and put a $150 400 out of an old Bonneville in it and that makes my $4000 Tempest worth $20,000 dude"

I guess it's been some years since I looked at '68 autos...I just know they at least WERE a lot more affordable than the good '65 '66 4spd consoles. $$$

Like any 1 year only part they will continue to be in demand, likely not be reproduced, and will command a higher price.

Check out this 68 auto console that a buddy of mine gave me. It doesn't look too bad up against my 4 speed console......until you turn it over.
Some highly creative ingenuity going on there.... ![]() ![]() ![]()

It most certainly pulled some rough duty. A combination of cardboard and expansion foam to shore up the broken plastic in order to maintain its shape.

I got curious about it and looked on ebay. Found a couple of decent ones but you guys are right, far from perfect. That is, structurally ok but a tear here, a hole drilled there. Mid to lower end driver quality and best.
