Here are some pictures of the shift knob off my low-mileage 71 trans am. It's in very nice condition, and I'm assuming it's original to the car.

That is interesting. Looks like it dates to the '40's or early '50's!

Yes, and unopened, too. I find references to this part number for things like 1942-48 Pontiac and 1965-66 Corvair and 1967-71 F-body so used for a good number of years. But, this is definitely one of the older style packages.

Next topic - Looks like by no later than 1977 the rear taillight assemblies

917145 and 917146

were no longer available and you had to make them up from the individual parts. Here's pictures of the complete assemblies again for reference.





The housings were available as one of the separate pieces after 1977. Sort of nice as these came with the front and back gaskets already installed.

The gaskets are not really very common and I only have one of each right hand and no left hand side of these so far. If you have a NOS left hand side for either of these that you'd part with I would be interested.

The lens are still MIA and instead of paying a fortune for NOS bezels I had these re-chromed. To me they look better than NOS. What do you guys use for the black trim paint on these?

I thought the earlier 2nd gens used a temp gauge that maxed out at 250, instead of 260, and the middle number is 210 instead of 220?

Yes, the gauges with the higher temp numbers were Service Replacement parts for the earlier lower temp units.
To me, this is kind of like using the '73 dated talilamp lenses for a '70-72 car. They'll fit fine and work well, but not exactly identical.
Chad, I'd say you are correct in believing that the gauge assembly was changed before you got the TA.

I was under the impression that the PF-30 oil filter was installed at the factory during the '60's-'70's.

Also, I'm kinda curious how many have some reservations about running a 40-50 year old oil filter in their nicely rebuilt engine.

I bet the change was in '74 and these parts ( 6493193 ) are from the early 80s. Many got swapped out that Never changed a thing.
Edit: maybe it was '71. I'll have to look through a few I have in Dated clusters. Wonder if its "Unleaded" and or Thermostat related.

By June, 1976, the 6493193 was the replacement GM specified for all 1970-76 Firebirds.

Yep, mine must have been replaced. Sounds like sometime in 1974 is correct as Bruce says. I can hopefully just send one out and get it repainted and recalibrated to match. No worries.

Mike - I need lots of parts. No question there. Glad I post things here or my car would be all goofed up....lol

1974 used the 220/260 graduated temp gauge.

I had always understood that the "210" gauge was 1970/1971... but unclear on when the exact change over was.

After seeing those two "220" gauges posted, I figured I'd wait to see what was said - and I wasn't disappointed.

Now, I could be wrong, but I thought the '73 that my brother has (it was mine for a time) came with the "220" gauge - but there's no gaurauntee that it wasn't installed as a service replacement at some point.

I would wager that older MPC's would clearly show when the "220" gauge showed up, and became the replacement gauge;
I have two, IIRC one is dated august 1974 (1975 catalog), and the other is a December 1976...

I know many here have older MPC's than my two...

Mike, I need date coded glass. Thinking about using Pilkington Classics. I have all my original glass except the windshield which was MIA when I got the car.

I have most all of the hangars I believe. Seems like the Waldron system doesn't come with those. And the chrome tips I have, too.

My wheels are looking pretty good. Hard to get a good picture of the color from any distance so I included a close up. Look OK?





I'll need tires. Debating whether to go with a radial or go with some OEM reproduction tires in a bias ply.

Thoughts on any of that?
