i will report day to day when i get more miles on it. currently at 25.4 but only 190 miles on it. i was mostly between 65-70 when i was getting 27, but did have to go through downtown pittsburgh. that wasn't exactly stop and go, more like speed up, slow down, up, down, up, down. my old hemi would get 23+ at 65 on the highway, but around town it was down to high 15's/low 16's. i'm not a "pedal to the metal" type of driver. |

This is more of a change away from what we all grew up with. V-8's and cubic inches. Ford is trying to find their way with smaller engines and turbo's. Interesting move by Dodge. One I think we've all been waiting on a mfg to do. I thought Toyota would be the first with a 1/2 ton diesel.....smart move by Dodge to lead the way. And no, GM's 1/2 diesels in the past don't count.

It's a 1/2 ton. 3/4 ton and 1 ton Dodge(Cummins) Diesels have always gotten much better mileage than ford and chevy with better pulling power(stock).

Matter of fact. I've had all three(more than three actually three different GM diesels, Two different fords and two different HPs of the dodge . The only drivetrain problem with dodge is their auto trans are junk(until their latest trans maybe).

![]() All three have their quirks but diesel is the way to go. Mines not a Ford. IH in a Ford truck. Has all the power/reliability I need. 137k and only replaced front pads and normal maintence items. Not throwing stones at Ram or Duramax. I do wish I had the Allison.

Rumor has it that Nissan will be introducing a 5 liter Cummins V8 diesel in their full-size truck line in late 2015.

Nissan has been working on it for a while now, the reports I've seen didn't give an impressive MPG result, yet.

What happened to mini-trucks and 50mpg with 4cyl Dzl ?
Bring it Back ! They were ahead of their most needed time maybe ? Or just mini-trucks with ANY type of power source would be nice to see again. My 81 VW Truck with 1.6 TboDzl has an extra-large-oversize fiberglass camper shell about 300 pounds on back. With the extra weight and wind drag, plus 400 pounds of combined cargo and myself - it averaged 42mpg going through all the up and down mountain ranges between NC and Markham Ontario Canada. Threw on another 1000-1200 pounds in Markham, and still averaged 42mpg coming back home also. Before i get hammered with BS complaints - it has HD lifted front struts, cargo spring assist rear shocks, extra leaf springs, and a super heavy duty plastic ribbed bed liner insert i cut to fit from a late model Dodge. Truck still far exceeds all practical expectations. Also has a custom built HD rear bumper for trailer towing. damd Gold Mine of a truck

Don't worry about the DEF. It is not a big deal. I have been driving a truck that requires it for 3 years now and the ratio is something like 2% DEF to the amount of fuel burned. A tank lasts a long time. I used to keep it topped off but now I just fill the tank when the DIC warning indicates 1000 miles left. I think its a precise mix of water and urea.(ammonia)

CAT totally abandoned the OTR market when the EPA instituted the new regs for 2010.

Here is a great log of a gentleman on Ram Forums on his trek from Colorado to Alaska towing a trailer with a brand new Ram EcoDiesel. Kinda sold me.

I was at a farm show yesterday and a fellow there had a saw mill demonstration going on. He took a break and called me over and said "Fitz I 've got something I want you to see and tell me what you think.'' He had taken a 2 litre toyota diesel and mounted it in an early 80's GMC 1 ton dump that he uses to pull the mill with. He claims the sawmill weighs around 5 tons and it pulls it with ease and he can get 45-50 mph with it on the flats. He also claims he 's getting around 40 mpg fuel milage. I also had another buddy who put a cummins 4 cylinder in an early 80's 4x4 chev plow truck. He swore by that truck and he always says that he wants to get another setup just like it. He claimed the milage was unbelievable. Ed

a little update:
6300 miles and no problems. when it was warm out i was seeing 24 in town and low 30's on the highway at 65-70 mph. now that's it's cold i'm down to 20-21 in town and high 20's on the highway. diesel is finally dropping($3.49 here), so i'm pretty happy with the truck. it's definitely not a cummins, you know you're pulling something, but i'm still seeing 5-6mpg better than my old hemi. |

Toyota is doing the same thing with the Tundra. They are supposed to be coming out in late 2015 with the same diesel that Nissan is using.

they(cummins) couldn't meet the mpg requirements that ram wanted, but i think it'd be a good choice for someone who uses their truck like a truck.
