This is why we went to the "LS-1" swap when we added the supercharger. This, along with Brian Baker's crank support will help my forged crank live.

Thanks for posting those for me Darby. I got a new camera and the size of the pic's are way to big for this site. I need to spend some time figuring out how to reduce them for the future.

Don, get a Photobucket account it's the easiest way I have found to get the pictures ready for PY posting. If you upload them to your Photobucket account you can edit them to your needs. That's the way I've been doing it for 7-8 years now and I'm far from a computer guru. Once you get used to it it's a snap and it's free too.

It's been awhile since I have posted anything here. I have been going 200 mph since the Pontiac Nationals. Anyway I thought I would post some pic's of the engine we are assembling for our test mule and get everyone up to speed. I also have some pic's of the intake and exhaust gaskets. I am not as far along as I would like, but I am trying to make sure everything I do is going to be able to be duplicated by the end user. The R&D part of these projects is a time killer for sure, but I feel it is my responsibility not the customers. Now if someone wants to push the envelope and do something out of the ordinary, I say go for it. Below are the engines spec's for our initial testing.

DCI RA5 480 cu.in. Test mule spec's:

4.190" bore JE light weight pistons dished for 11-1 compression
4.350" stroke Bryant Billet crank
6.850" rods Crower steel
Mahle low drag ring package
King engine bearings 2" rods, 2.5" mains
Cloyes billet timing set
LSM custom hydraulic roller cam 250 @ .050 int, 259 @ .050 exh 109 LS installed at 107
Hydraulic limited travel roller lifters
Luhn Performance cam bearings
Luhn Performance oil pump
Trend double taper 3/8" pushrods
Harland Sharp shaft mount roller rockers 2.0-1 ratio
PSI valve springs,retainers, and keepers
Advance sleeve main bearing spacers
Stef's 8 qt oil pan
DCI RA5 heads flow 420+ cfm int @ .700", 280+ cfm @ .700"exh
DCI RA5 cast intake
REV 5/16" stem stainless steel valves 2.300" intake, 1.68" exhaust
DCI stepped,tri-y,merge collector custom built headers. 2.125" to 2.25" into a merge collector that exits with a 2.5" pipe into a 2.75" merge collector expanding out to a 3.5" exit.
Induction we will be trying two different styles, Port fuel injection then a single 1000 cfm carb.
MSD ignition Distributor, 7AL box, and matching coil

As you can tell this is not an all out build, but more of a real street build. I want the engine to run on pump gas, idle well in traffic, and make a broad torque curve. I am going to push the engine once we get a good base line, but for now I need a entry level starting point. This will be the type of engine I would build for a mostly street driven car that gets occasionally drag raced.

I started a facebook account too. So everyone can follow me over there if they would like as well. The one pic of the gaskets shows the 2 different style intake gaskets that I will be offering. The one is obviously the traditional round or oval port and the other is my race or pro street version. The exhaust gaskets I slotted the lower bolt holes so that you can install all of the lower bolts and then slide the gasket into place before installing the upper bolts. Some of the photo's you can see I am making main bearing spacers to reduce the mains down from 3" to 2.5". I am doing this for better oil control with lower viscosity oils (0w30,5w30, etc).

Don,
At what RPM are you looking to made peak HP?

Shooting for around 6500. The cam and headers are going to be the limiting factors I think. The cam is just about right for 6500. The headers are more for a broad torque curve and will limit the upper rpm's a little. After I get a good idea what this combo has to offer. I am going to put a bigger cam in it and a standard big tube header. I over built this engine for this initial combo, but we are going to be doing allot of testing with it. So I built a good foundation for future abuse LOL.

Don,
Thanks. Looking at the engine size, head flow and cam without knowing anything about its actual lift curve I had been thinking a little higher than that.

I see an Allen-head bolt holding a main insert while you mill the insert ends. Did you tap the block's main saddle oil holes to 5/16-18? What size will the oil drillings be in the inserts? Did you say that the inserts were bought from Advance Sleeve?

Jack, Actually that is a bolt with a nut on the other end I did that for obvious reasons. If you look close you can see I pinned the sleeves to keep them in place and I bolted the spacers in place to hold them tight while I drilled them for the pins. I just left them in while I faced the spacers off. Yes Advance Sleeve in Mentor Ohio made the spacers for me. I gave them the spec's I wanted and they made them exactly as I wanted. Really good people to deal with.

Have seen a lot of "reduced main" set-ups with a Half Spacer for the Block and a Custom Steel Main Cap with the correct bore size for the smaller bearing you want to run.

Do you have other examples and pictures to show us for the Top and Bottom spacer configuration on other successful engines?

Thanks for the pics.

Would Advance have done the bearing tang notches if you wanted them to?
I assume Bryant will make the rear oil slinger the normal O.D. used with 3" mains? And also the oil-seal area diameter?
