My mechanic has advised me I should start looking for a carb for my Can Am. He rebuilt the present one when I bought the car 7-8 years ago. He said it is worn out he has babyed it along. Anyone have a good one for sale for a Can Am? Maybe look on e-bay and give me the number of one that is on there for sale that will work. I know nothing about this kind of stuff, so any help is appreciated.

Is this the original carb for the car?
Might be better to have Cliff Ruggles check it out and see if it's rebuildable?

The throttle shafts commonly wear, and bushings are available to remedy this. The only thing that makes a Q-Jet unusable are stripped inlet threads, and warped main bodies due to over tightening.

(1) 1/64 inch oversize tap and fitting OR BETTER (2) installation of a heli-coil What does generally ruin the body is when Dr. Goodpliers (the evil twin of Mr. Goodwrench) installs one of the self-tapping fittings; as the self-tapping fitting removes so much metal that insufficient metal remains to do a proper repair. My mechanic has been working on Pontiacs since 1975 having got his first job out technical school working at a Pontiac dealership in Littlerock, AR. He worked on my first Can Am I bought new in 1977 and this is my second one and is the original carb. He has worked on many Trans Am's and has rebuilt a many a quadrajet carb over the years and knows a lot about them. So when he says I need to be thinking about finding another I take his word for it. However, I will print this out and ask him about these. The main complaint I hear him say is that he can't get the car to idle the way he would like it to and it cuts out when you jump on it from a dead stop. Thanks, Kbars

The idle fuel feed tubes must be removed during an overhaul. A lot of crap builds up in the idle circuits, and they can't be properly cleaned without removing them. Also, the size of the tube's orifice is pretty small for a '77, so opening them up a couple of thousands of an inch will give you more idle fuel. The mixture screws will still allow for a proper mixture. Cliff Ruggles book goes into great detail on how to do this.

Would putting larger idle feed tubes in the q-jet help acceleration at all? I rebuilt a 76 Pontiac q-jet and put it on the Pontiac 350 in my 75 Lemans. I did pull the tubes, but put the stock size back in. It's a bit sluggish on take off, and other than being an original low powered engine with 2.56's, I think it should still be a little snappier on takeoff. Just wondering what the tubes affect. Otherwise, the idle is great and it runs fine once it gets going.

Larger idle fuel feed tube orifices might help an off idle lean stumble. Once off idle, the main metering circuits come into play. The power piston spring, APT, and metering/jetting take effect.

Never heard of that. Warping of the air horn and main body is common when the tightening sequence isn't followed.

I am looking for a q-jet carb for my Can Am. Let me know what you have and how much. Even if it needs to be rebuilt is OK as long as in good condition. Thanks, Kelly You can e-mail at [email protected]
