I looked at the pictures and couldn't read the date code. Were the ones produced on that date better than all the rest?

![]() I'm late to the water pump date code party. My understanding is it's a Jillian code and application is determined by the casting number. |

And what does the date code read now that everything is bolted up? It's the same, you just can't see it. Which is why I found it funny one would go through three to finally find thee one to use. Never noticed the Julian date coding on a water pump. Maybe earlier than '72?
Pictured are '72, '73 and '75 water pump codes. Can't find the picture of the '74 one. |

Its a thing I have and I am seeking therapy. Looking good Greg and sorry I'll be missing that show. Hunting is more important that time of the year. Wish you the best though!
HFR, what would be the correct two letter code for the early build Power Steering Pump?? |

Dates don't tell the entire story. Gxx0 and later dated '71 waterpumps were the "138". the 138's were cast up into the end of Dec poss early Jan of '72 and also used on many early to mid '72 engines. I started pulling original "138"s in the early 90's, have a good stock of cores and have had nearly two dozen rebuilt over the years. The first " 296" casting waterpumps were cast in Nov of '71, there seems to be some overlap as both "138"s and "296"s were both being cast for aprox 2 months. The "296" has a different bearing in it and required a different cartridge rebuild kit than the earlier "138"s and "124"s. During the '71 model year, Pontiac put out a service bulletin focused on introducing these cartridge rebuild kits. The cartridge rebuild kits never made the master parts books, have ck'ed multiple sets dated in '71, 72, and 73. Some dealers ordered these kits & their service depts used them, others preferred to source new GM or rebuilt pumps. One local rebuilder I do biz with with had a booming business in the early 70's with many of his company's pumps going to new dealers. Little need for the cartridge rebuild kits today, though it would be nice to have extra correct impellers.
On the "296" casting pumps, there are several different cosmetic styles, both the small casting number style and the big casting number style. In the attic, in it's replacement's GM box, I have the original pump off my early '80 turbo SE. Replaced it in 1985 with a new GM pump I sourced from local dealership. the new GM pump that is still on the car today, has the Julian style dating. the original pump with under 25k miles would have made it many thousand more miles, if I was not so ignorant, getting carried away with running the alt belt so tight after I removed the a/c brackets and swapped to a two groove pulley. In examining thousands of original Pontiac casting waterpumps since I started pulling them as specialty cores in the early 90's, what I've deduced on the "296"s, the very last versions that Pontiac central foundry cast were all Julian dated. Before that, from the first original use "296" casting pumps, all the way through the '70's into those early '80 builds like my '80 turbo T/A, the dates were alphanumeric. Another thing about the "296"s, the late 70's early 80's 301-265 usage pump used an impeller with very short vanes. That style impeller will work fine in a 400 or 455 that has been partially hard blocked, but otherwise is not a smart choice for use in rebuilding a correct dated pump for a normal water jacketed 400 or 455. A smart longtime rebuilder should know that, but so many times, it all becomes a blurr. Last Spring I went through several 5 gal buckets full of loose impellers at my rebuilders shop & not a single one was correct for a "138" casting that had picked up a stamped impeller over the years. Given enough boneyarding, will come up with some more 138's that are cosmetically horrible, and have their original impellers.

'ol pinion head,
This picture is of a water pump on a 72 Firebird with a 350. I believe it is the original pump to the car, but I'm not 100% sure. This one has a "72" cast into the pump, and I assume that indicates 1972. Did the 296 pumps always have the model year cast into them? Did it change year-by-year? |

Brew, it would have been coded HG, like your '73-4, however I don't know what kind of decal it used.
oPh, I believe the large casting number will have '72' cast also. '74' had the smaller number. eagle, the date is late (Sept. '72, might even be '73. J15?). Doubt it's original. This '76 unit has no '7*' casting. Last edited by Held for Ransom; 11-01-2014 at 06:18 PM. |

Mike, may be so on the casting number style, need to bring in & examine the straggler (later date) "296"s that I've pulled off partscars I've hauled in & cut up. Have those unsorted pumps at the warehouse along with a bunch of original 8 bolt pumps. In the garage, have all of my stock early 11 bolt style pump cores organized 3 to a box, the early ones have always sold well & just easier to get to when have them boxed & tagged. I prob need to pay more attention to the pumps that were used on '75 & 76 Pontiacs. Just have never sought out dated pumps for those two years, very little demand, once get into W72 build range, have pulled those as well.

![]() I had a quick look at the pics and two things really jumped out at me...... The repro Formula wheel looks TERRIBLE....and the dash bezel appears to "out of focus".......? Both those items would not be a part of ANY $70.000 car I'd be buying.
