Lightly heat it and just tap it sideways .

This reminds me when I had my 65 rebuilt. The machine shop switched the heads so the nipple was on the wrong side. I got another nipple then proceeded to remove the old one. I tried heat a huge pipe wrench a screwdriver and a chisel and it would not move. I finally called the machine shop and he said it would pop right out. I said I tried that so they sent a mechanic. He was not happy having to drive 30 miles one way. He told me when he got there that it just pops right out this trip is unnecessary. He took out his channel locks and tried it then a pipe wrench then a screwdriver and after 30 minutes he broke out the chisel and broke it apart to get it out. He finally says I got it and I said wow if I had known it would pop right out like that I would have done that myself. He left in disgrace after his boss called asking what was taking him so long.

A good humbling sometimes relieves the stress of the moment, just not for the guy in the limelight!

I've used an old pair of channel locks clamped on the nipple and banged on them to remove. But most of the time I destroy them to remove them, before going to the machine shop.

A wide blade chisel with a tad rolled over tip will let you get under the base of it and rock it up and out little by little, and this method will even with the thin steel cased type nipple allow you to reuse it with only a thin film of silicone sealer to set it in place

The older nipples were a solid steel piece. Some time around '73 they changed to sheet metal ones. Either way might be prudent to get an aftermarket replacement piece if yours looks rough.

I got mine out with a bearing seaprater clamped on the large part right next to the head.
Knocked it out with a hammer. Reused both of them, I have one in each head.
This only works with the head off the block.

I prefer the large pipe wrench on the nipple with a little lifting while twisting. Not much different than pulling a cork out of a bottle in that the twisting breaks surface tension so the nipple is more inclined to slide out.

thanks for all the advice guys!
tried the channel locks.
tried the pipe wrench.
tried the chisel and hammer.
tried heating it up... could not
get it move.
in the end i cut the nipple off so i could use a pilot bearing puller, then it came out pretty smooth after about half-a-dozen whacks with a 5lb slide hammer.
thanks again,
danny
